P. B. OOMINS. FIRE PAIL.
No. 520,727. Patented May 29, 18 94.

l NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK B. corners, on PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
FIRE-PAIL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 520,727, dated May 29, 1894.
Application filed September 19,1893. Serial ITO-485,785. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, FRANK B. COMINS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fire-Pails, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanyingdrawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in fire pails for the purpose of extinguishing incipient or early fires in buildings, &c., and it consists in connection with an ordinary fire pail of a cover having a slotted delivery nozzle with tapering contracted sides for the purpose of causing the waterin the pail when thrown upon a fire, to issue in the form of a sheet of great extinguishing power and effect which can be directed accurately by the operator in the desired direction by which unnecessary waste of water is avoided and the efficacy of the pail as a fire extinguisher is materially increased as will hereinafter be more fully shown and described reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1, represents a side elevation of a fire pail provided with my improved cover and delivery nozzle. Fig. 2, represents a top plan view thereof; and Fig. 3, represents a central longitudinal section of the same.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
A. represents an ordinary fire pail made of Wood, fiber, metal or other material and provided with a hinged bail B. as usual.
To the upper open end of the pail A. I attach in a suitable manner permanently or otherwise a preferably tapering 0r inclined cover 0. extended upwardly as a tapering or inclined and laterally elongated or flattened delivery nozzle D. having a slotted delivery mouth or opening (1. at its upper end as shown in the drawings.
From the above it will be seen that the wafor as it is thrown out of the pail is ejected through the flattened mouth (1. in the form of a sheet of more or less thickness which may be accurately directed against the fire to be extinguished thus making the throw of water very effective and preventing unnecessary waste of water in the pail. With ordinary fire pails the contents thereof is wastefully ejected at a single throw necessitating a constant refilling of such pails whereas with my hood or cover attachment thereto the contents of the pail can be successively ejected in the form of a powerful sheet or flattened body of water which can easily be directed to the desired spot or place by the operator thus preventing a waste of water and increasing the effective power of a pail as a ready fire extinguisher. The cover may be permanently attached to the top of the pail or be removable therefrom for refilling if so desired without departing from the spirit of my invention. I 7
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim As a new article of manufacture, the herein described cover and nozzle for fire pails, consisting of a rigid truncatedcone-shaped base 0 provided with an open annular bottom having a depending flange for engaging the top of the pail, and an elongated, flattened and gradually tapering nozzle D having parallel edges and an elongated slotted delivery mouth for ejecting the contents of the pailin a broad flat sheet, substantially as shown and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses,on this 9th day of September, A. D. 1893.
FRANK B. OOMINS.
