DAM PER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,97 9, dated June 8, 1897.
Application filed April 2l, 1896. Serial No. 58th/$18. (No model.)
To all whom, llt 'nntp' con-Gerrit:
Be it known that I, Geenen CHAPMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leavenworth,in the county of Leavenworth and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dampers and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in stove-door dampers; and the novelty resides in the peculiar construction and combination of parts, which is more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and then particularly pointed out in the claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a view showing the application of the invention. Fi g. 2 is a longitudinal section through the saine. Fig. 3 is a vertical section.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in the several views.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A. designates the door, provided 'with the openings u for the ingress of the air, and B is the draft-plate, pivotally mounted upon the rear of this door, seated in a concavity a thereof, and although this may be pivotally mounted in any suitable manner I have in this instance chosen to show it as provided at its upper edge with openings l), into which are loosely received the inwardly and upwardly extending pins C, only one of which is shown, projecting from the rear face of the door, the construction being such that the plate B normally by gravity will assume its closed position in close Contact with the inner wall of the door. The outer face of this plate is preferably provided with a facing or sheet of abcstos D or other analogous material, held thereto in any suitable manner, although this may sometiin es be dispensed with, and this plate is designed to be moved on its pivot and held in its adjusted position by means of a screw E, having a quick thread and engaging a corresponding thread in a washer F and the coincident portion of the door, the outer end of the screw being provided with a suitable knob or handle lll and the inner end held loosely to the plate by means of the screw l, working loosely in an opening in the plate and engaged in the inner end of the screw, a suitable washer K being preferably provided between the head of the screw and the inner face of the plate.
The operation will be apparent. Normally the plate is closed against the inner face of the door, and when in this position it is absolutelyair-tight. When it is desired to open the plate and allow the ingress of air, all that is necessary to do is to simply turn the screw in the proper direction, when the plate is forced inward, and the more it is forced inward the tighter it is held at its upper edge, so that the air entering is forced downward beneath the plate and onto the fire in the place where it is adapted to serve its best functions. The plate may be held at any desired angle to admit more or less draft by simple adjustment of the screw.
Modifications in detail may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new isl. The combination with a door and a draftplate pivotally mounted upon the rear thereof and seated in a concavity therein, of a threaded washer, a screw having a quick thread engaging the threads of the washer, a handle on the outer end of said screw, and a screw passed through the plate working loosely in an opening therein and engaged in the screwthreaded opening inthe inner end of the iirstmentioned screw, all substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination with a door and pins extending inwardly and upwardly from the rear face thcreof,of a draft-plate having openings through which said pins pass whereby it is pivotally and loosely mounted, said door having a concavity-to receive said plate, a threaded washer, a screw attached to and adapted to actuate the damper and having a quick thread engaging the' threads of the IOO washer, and a handle on the outer end of said screw, all substantially as described.
In testimony whereof l have signed this specification in the presence of two subscrib ing witnesses.
GEORGE CHAPMAN.
