Description

(No Model.)
A. SOHWAAB, Jr.
HEAD REST.
Patented May 29, 1894:.
U ITED STATES ADAM SOHWAAB, JR.,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HEAD-REST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 520,577, dated May 29, 1894.
Application filed February 2, 1 8 94. serial No. 498,923- (N0 model- My invention relates to a head-rest for barhers chairs, and its object is to provide an adjustable rest which has limited inward and outward movements, such rest being quickly and conveniently adjusted in an exceedingly simple manner, thereby improving the whole construction of such devices.
My invention consists of certain features of construction and combination of parts to be hereinafter fully described and then pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a side elevation of a barbers chair, partly in section, showing my improved head-rest applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detached sideview of my improved head rest, showing it in raised position full lines and in lowered position in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a rear-view of the same, and Figs. 4 and 5 are detail,
views, showing the connection between the rest and the link, the latter being on line 55, of Fig. 4..
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents an ordinary barbers chair, and a the back of the chair, which is constructed with suitable means to support the head-rest, according to the nature of the standard or post thereof. In the present instance the standard B is provided with ratchet-teeth b, so as to form a ratchet-bar, which can be adjusted within the recess a of the back and held in adjusted position by means of a spring-actuated pin 0.
The rest-proper D is provided at the under side of its upper part with a pair of lugs at, through which passes a pivot d, which also passes through the upper end of the standard inserted between said lugs, where by the rest is pivoted to the standard. An elongated lug E is located at the under side of the lower part of the rest D and through the base of the same a pivot 6 passes, said pivot also passing through the forked end f of a link F, which is connected at the other end, by means of a pivot f, with a slide G, mounted so as to be adjusted on the standard by a thumb-screw g.
In operation the slide G is moved along the standard B so as to swing the rest D on its pivot 01, the rest being retained in adj usted position bythe thumb-screw g which is made to bear, at its inner end, firmly against the standard. When the rest is moved outwardly from the standard by the lowering of the slide G, a point is reached where the elongated lug E engages with the part of the link located between its forked ends, and consequently it acts as a stop to prevent further movement of the sleeve. The contact between the stop-lug E is established as soon as the rest reaches the limit of its otherwise possible outward adjustment, for it will be seen that if the lug were not elongated sufliciently, the slide could be lowered still farther on the standard and the rest would be drawn toward the standard instead of pressed outwardly. The rest may be caused to assume the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, by raising the slide to its highest point, when the end of the lug Ewill impinge against the standard and support the rest out of contact with any of the underlying parts, so that the weight upon the rest will not cause the breaking of any of the parts, for otherwise the pivot d might be broken or the rest injured by the pressure of the latter upon the slide.
When the device is properly mounted, it is evident that it may also be utilized as a bookrest. As a head-rest it is of course provided with the usual upholstering.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with a standard or post, and a rest hinged at one end thereto and provided with an elongated stop-lug at the able slide located on said standard, a link In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
