RAIN-WATER CUT-OFF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 520,484, dated May 29, 1894. Application filed October 17, 1892- Serial No. 449,157. (No model.)
To alt whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. HILLIKER,
' a citizen of the'United States, residing at lnmbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented acertain new and useful Improvement in Rain-Water Cut-Offs, of wh1ch the following is a specification.
My invention relates to rain-water cut-offs of that class wherein diverging pipes are provlded at their junction with an internal deiiectoror cut-0E valve and the objects of my inventlon are, to provide a cut-off of this class of superior construction and arrangement of parts; to obviate the necessity of making a pivotal connection of the operating rod with the cut-0E and thus provide against said outoff becoming inoperative through a breaking away or disconnection of the operating rod therefrom and to otherwise produce a simple and reliable device of this class. These obects I accomplish in the manner illustrated 1n the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved cut off showing the internal deflector in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is alower end view. Fig. 3 1s aplan View and Fig. 4 is a central Vertical section.

a represents the casing of my improved cutoff, the body of which is substantially of an oval form, as shown. The upper side or top portion of said casing converges as shown at b, to meet the central mouth or inlet pipe socket 6 From this mouth 1) extends inwardly and downwardly to a point within the upper portion of the casing body, a short pipe sectlon c. Asshown in the drawings, the lower portion of the casing body is divided by a central transverse ridge (1, of an inverted U-shaped form which results as shown, in the formation of two diverging tubular outlet portions e, to which are adapted to be socured in the usual manner, pipes leading to different points.
To the inner end portion of the pipe section 0 and at points diametrically opposite each other are pivoted the sides of a substantially scoop-shaped cut-0E section or valve plate 9, which when turned at' the proper angle is adapted to have its lower end portion engage with one side of the ridge 6! and have its upper end portion abut against or project be yond one side .of the inlet tube 0, said out 01f section or valve thus serving to direct the water which enters through the tubular portion 0 into the desired one of the passages e.
It represents a cut-off operating wire or rod, which consists as shown, of a U shaped or yoke portion h which embraces the cut-off g at a distance therefrom and which is pivotallysupported at opposite points in thecase a opposite the pivot points of said cut-off as indicated at 2'. One end of the yoke is extended outward to form a crank-handle h on one side of the outer case.
Secured to the outer side of the case a on opposite sides of the pivot point side of the handle k are the ends of a spring catch wire projecting outward from its connecting points with said case to form shoulders from which point the side arms of said wire catch-piece are inclined inwardly to meet the converging top-portion b of the case to which the upper end of said catch is secured.
The operation of my improved cut-off is as follows: It being desired to turn the cut-off valve to the inclined position shown in dotted lines in Fig. l or to the reverse of said position and thus direct the water through the desired outlet 6, the handle it is turned until the yoke h is brought into contact with the under side of one end of said cut-off valve when a downward pressure upon said crankhandle will through the pressure of said yoke turn the valve upon its pivots to the position hereinbefore described. In this downward movement of said handle, it will be seen that a bearing of the same will be had upon one side of the catch rod 70 and that when said handle is moved downward such distance as to cause its engagement with one of the shoulders it, said shoulder will operate to lock the handle and cut-off in the proper position.
- From the constructionherein shown and described, it will be seen that an improved means of moving the cut-01f valve is provided by means of which the water entering the mouth of the casing a may be readily directed to either of the outlets c. It will be observed that the construction of my device is such as to admit of its production in a simple and inexpensive manner.
It is well known that where the cut-0E sec sac et tion has a pivotal connection with the operating rod there exists a tendency for said rod to pull outward from the cut-0E and becoming disconnected therefrom when the cut-off or its operating rod is subjected to an unusual strain, such as is often necessary when the parts become clogged with ice. It is also well known that owing to the action of rust at the pivot points above mentioned the operating rod or wire is often easily worked loose from the cut-off. By the construction herein shown it is evident that this difficulty will be obviated, inasmuch as there is no pivotal connection between the rod and cut-off, said rod operating to simply'pnsh the cut-off section into place.
I am aware that pivoted cut-off valves have been employed heretofore and that they have been used in conjunction with the inner projecting end of an inlet pipe and therefore, do not claim such construction broadly.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi In a rain-water cutoff, the combination with the casing a, an inlet opening b and diverging outlets e in the bottom thereof, of an inwardly extending inlet pipe 0, a substantially scoop-shaped cut-off valve 9 having its sides hinged to said inlet pipe 0, and a yoke h pivoted in the outer casing a as described, and adapted to move the cut-0E valve 9 by contact with either end thereof, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
