UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MASON J. CLARK, OF CAROLINE CENTRE, NEW YORK.
CHECKRElN-LOOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 519,991, dated May 15, 1894.
Application filed March 2, 1894. Serial No. 502,133- (N 0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, MASON J. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Caroline Centre, in the county of Tompkins and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful ImprovementsinCheckrein-Loops;and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the sam e.
This invention relates to check rein loops, and its object is to provide means for connecting the check rein with the check rein hook of harness in such a manner that the rein cannot be shaken loose by the horse, nor be thrown loose by the reins while in service, and to hold the check rein from drawing through and through the hook and wearing the same in service.
To this end my invention consists in the construction and combination of parts forming a check rein loop, hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure I, is a top view of a check rein loop made according to my invention. Fig. II, is a longitudinal vertical section through the center of the same.
The body of the loop comprises two pieces of leather5 and 6, joined together face to face by a line of stitches 7, around near their edge. The body is slotted by a perforation 8 extending through it to receive a slide 9, which is also made of leather or it may be rubber or any such soft material. This slide is provided with metallic cheek plates 10, rigidly secured to it, one on each' face, and extending at their edges 11 and end 12 over upon the body, and the body is depressed in its two faces forming grooves in which the plates are fitted to slide, down flush with the general surface of the body. Between the two portions of the body an aperture 13 is formed to receive the spring 14, which, acts against the slide 9 to push it forward and close the slot, and when the loop of which this slot is the aperture, is placed over a hook the slide will be impelled against the front of the hook and the body be pulled against the rear, thus grasping it firmly, yet the soft material of the leather prevents its wearing the hook.
15 is another aperture through the body of the loop to receive the check rein. In placing this loop upon the hook it is only necessary to insert the hook end at the forward end of the loopand crowd the loop upon the hook,
the spring behind the slide permitting the slide to recede to admit the hook. The loop may be in the same manner removed from the hook, the force of the spring and slide resisting such movement by friction enough to maintain the loop in place but not enough to cause difficulty in placing it on or off.
This device is simple, effective and inex pensive and may be made to any degree ornamental.
Having described my invention, what I believe to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following:
The combination in a check-rein loop, of two body portions of leather or similar soft and strong material joined face to face and punctured to receive a check-rein and having a longitudinal slot and grooved at each side thereof; a leather slide fitting within the said slot; a pair of metallic cheek plates secured upon the sides of the slide and fitted to slide in the aforesaid grooves; a spring between the cheek plates, at the end of the slide and an aperture longitudinally between the body portions to receive the said spring, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereofIaffix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
