UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
I-IAMILTON F. LOW, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO LOUIS KOEHL, OF SAME PLACE.
MOP-HEAD SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 519,917, dated May 15, 1894. Application led May 27, 1893. Serial No. l175,687. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom t may concern,.-
I Se it known that I, HAMILTON F. Low, a
cltizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of 5 Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mop-Heads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which Io 1t appertains to make and use the same.
y This invention relates to certain improvements in mop-heads; the object being to pro duce a mop`-head of novel construction which shall be light, strong and cheap.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front elevazo tion of my improved mop-head. Fig. 2 is a central sectional view of the base and parts adjacent thereto; and Fig. 3 is a side view of a part of the base and the means for connecting the frame thereto.
The base A of the mop-head is tubular, whereby the handle may be inserted at one 4 end and the stem of the follower may enter the other, The frame B is made of wire so bent that it forms two parallel sides l) b which 3o guide the follower; a connecting cross bar b between which and the follower the mop is held; and the converging ends b2 b2 which are connected with the base. As the means for connecting these ends with the base I con struct the base preferably of malleable iron,
and form on each side thereof two lugs d a. Each end of the frarneis placed between two of these lugs which are then upset or bent down onto said ends.` This prevents the dis 4o connection of said ends by movement in a sidewise direction. `To prevent their disconnection by moving them longitudinally, I also form on the base the iianges a. a which engage with the parts of the ends b2 b2 which diverge from said base, as shown most clearly in Fig. 2. The follower C is made of wire bent into substantially the forni shown. The cross bar c of said follower is made of two strands of wire twisted together to stiffen them. This part of the follower should be 5o substantially parallel to the part b of the frame, and it is so held and guided in its movement by the loops c', formed by bending the wire backward toward the center and the sides b b which pass through said loops. At substantially the center of the follower one end c2 of the wire of which it is formed is bent at right angles to the part c, and forms a stem. v The other end c3 of the wire is wound Spirally about said stem thereby forming a 6o spiral rib or thread with which the thumb nut D engages. The thumb nut on its under side has two notched ears d d which embrace an annular flange a2 on the base, thereby preventing longitudinal motion of the nut but permitting it to be revolved. The nut has a spirally grooved central hole with which it engages with the threaded stem of the follower; and it also has side wings d d by means of which it may be revolved.
Having described my invention, I claiml. In a mop-head, the combination of a frame having a transverse cross-bar, two parallel sides and converging ends, a base to which said ends are secured, and an annular ilange a2 on said base, with a follower having a rigidly connected threaded stem, and a. nut which engages with said stem and two notched ears secured to said nut which embrace the flange a2, substantially as set forth.
2. In a mop-head, the combination of a base having the annular iiange a2, and a frame consisting of a transverse cross-bar, two sides and two ends which are secured to said base, with a follower -having loops at the ends of its cross-bar and a stem formed of one straight wire and one wire wound spirally about the straightwire, and a nut which engages with said stem and has two notched ears which engage with the ilange 0.2, substantially as 9o set forth.
In testimony whereoflafx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
