UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. TEUFEL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
ECRASEUR.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No.519,'798, dated May 15, 1894. Application filed February 6,1894. Serial No. 499,260. (No model.)
.To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. TEUFEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at the c1ty of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Ecraseurs, of which the following isa speciiication.
My invention has relation to ecraseurs for c astrating animals; and it relates more partlcularly to the construction and arrangement of such an instrument.
The principal object of my present inventlon 1s to provide a comparatively simple, durable and eiiicient ecraseur having a taper ing screw threaded operating rod and a complemental threaded spring controlled trigger de vlce adapted to engage said rod so as to permit of a movement in one direction while the trlgger device is in engagement therewith to take up slack in the chain or noose of the in` strument and to prevent a movement of the same in an opposite direction until the said trigger device is released from its engagement with the said rod.
My invention consists of the improvements hereinafter described and claimed.
The nature and characteristic features of my mvention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connectlon with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, and in which- Figure l, is a side elevational view of an ecraseur embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2, is a top or plan View thereof. Fig. 3, is a longitudinal central section through the device of Fig. l; and Fig. 4, is a detached view of the several parts of the instrument of my invention, showing the detail construction and arrangement thereof.
Referring to the drawings A, is the barrel or tube of the instrument provided with an oblong slot-a, extending the length thereof. The forward portion of said barrel or tube A, is made solid and tapering at a', and terminates in a keeper or loop a2, at the end there of. At the rear end of the barrel or tube A, is detachably fitted a stock B, having a ring or handle b, a recessed end b', and a flanged 0r beaded front end b2, through which is inserted a tightening screw ha, engaging a slot or opening in the wall of the barrel or tube A, in order to detachably secure the stock B, thereto. rlhis stock B, is provided with a trigger or cam lever b4, having about midway in the length thereof a lng b5, with a semicircular ribbed or threaded face b, adapted to engage a slot 197, formed in the top and extending through the stock B.
bs, is a leaf spring screwed into a recess b9, in the stock, adapted to receive the same and engaging at the free end with the surface of the cam or trigger lever b4, in order that by a pressure exerted on the free end of this lever b4, the lug b5, may be caused to engage with the threaded surface c, of a longitudinal operating rod C, extending through said stock B, and the slotted barrel or tube A and provided with a slanting threaded or ribbed sulface adapted to permit of the engagement of the lug b5, of the cam or trigger lever b4, so as to lock therewith, while at the same time the taper of the threaded portion of the rod is such as t0 permit of the rod being drawn rearwardly against the face of the lug b5, of the lever b4, in its locked or depressed position, as shown in the drawings. This rod C, is provided at the rear end with a handle C', and at the forward smooth surfaced end with shoulders or circularprojections cand c2, between which is engaged a collar or sleeve d, carrying a slider D, with a slot D', extending through the middle thereof and with sockets or slots d2 and d3, conforming to the enlarged endsf and f2, of a sprocket or other suitable chain F, held to place in said sockets or slots d2 and d3, by means of a slotted clamp plate E', provided with a pin engaging in the slot d', in the body of the slider D, and having a tightening screw f3, adapted to hold to place the rear enlarged ends of the cord or chain F, which normally extends through the keeper or loop a2, of the barrel or tube A, and forming a noose or loop for embracing the member of the animal.
The operation of the instrument hereinbefore described, is as followsz--It must be assumed that the loop has been causedto 0ccupy the position illustrated in Fig. 2, and that the cam or trigger lever has also been caused to occupy a depressed position with the ribbed or threaded face of the lug thereof IOO in contact with the threaded portion of the rod C. By drawing rearwardly on the rod C,
nooseorchain F, lwill be readily faken up and so as to properly embrace the member to be held tightly or otherwise for the performance of an operation and such will be so held with y respect to any pressure exerted against the surface of the 1ugb5, of the spring trigger device b4, in engagement with the threaded rod i C, during the operation being performediupon the animal.
When slack of the chain or noose F, is required, by simply raising the cam Aor trigger lever device 645 the 'samem'ay be readily effected by a reverse pushing movement 'i Y of the rodrrC, through the barrel and stock of the instrument.
Having thus described the nature and oh- GEO. W TEUFEL.
