APPARATUS FOR EXPELLING FLIES FROM HOUSES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 519,793, dated May 15, 1894.

Be it known that I, RHorEN FLEMMING LOTSPEIOH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Expelling Flies from Houses; and I do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in devices for clearing rooms of flies; and its novelty and advantages will be fully understood from the following description and claims when taken in conjunction with the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1, is a detail, vertical section of a window equipped with my improvements. Fig. 2, is a similar view with the parts in position to permit the flies to pass out of a room. Fig. 3, is a detail, front elevation with the parts in the position shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a similar view with the parts in the positions shown in Fig. 2.

Referring by letter to said drawings: E- indicates a window sash which may be of the ordinary or any approved construction; and F, indicates the pane or light thereof. This pane or light F, is cut away at its upper end across its entire width so as to form an open ing a, between its upper edge and the upper cross bar of the sash, but it is otherwise of the ordinary form and may be secured in the sash in any approved manner.

J, indicates suitable bearing plates which are fixedly connected to the inner sides of the side bars of the sash by screws K, or thelike;

and G, indicates a rock shaft which is journaled at its ends in suitable bearings in the plates J, as illustrated. The said rock shaft G, has fixedly connected to it, a plate as H, which corresponds in width to the pane F, and this plate is provided at its outer edge with a rod 0, to which the pendent plate H, is connected, and is also provided at intervals in its width with angle irons or pieces V, which have one of their branches fixedly connected to it as illustrated. By this construction it will be perceived that when the shaft G, is rocked in the direction indicated by arrow (see Fig. 2), the plate H, will be carried against the upper cross bar of the sash and the plate H, will be carried against the pane and will be securely held in such position by the loose branches of the angle irons or pieces V, as shown in Fig. 1. p

In order that the shaft G, may be conveniently rocked to carry the plate H, toward or away from the pane, I provide the crank arm L, which is fixedly connected to the shaft, preferably at one side of the window, and the depending cord N, which is connected to the crank arm at M. This cord N, extends down within convenientreach of a person standing upon the floor of the room and it may be and preferably is connected to a suitable catch (not illustrated) through the medium of which the plate H, may be fixed in its various positions.

In operating my improved device to clear a room of flies, I take advantage of the natural instinct of the fly, which prompts him to crawl up and never down upon a vertical surface. I therefore fix the plate H, at a slight distance from the pane as shown in Fig. 2, so that when the flies light upon the pane they will crawl up between the same and the plate and will consequently pass out into the open air.

When there is more than one Window in the room to be cleared of the insects, all the windows with the exception of the one equipped with my improvements should be darkened so that the flies which always fly toward the light will quickly get upon the pane F, and be conducted outof the room.

When the weather is cold or inclement the opening a, may be closed by simply rocking the shaft G, so as to carry the plate H, against the pane, as shown in Fig. 1, and fastening the cord N, in any approved manner.

By reason of the construction described it will be seen that my improvements may be made very light and cheap, and when nickel plated or polished they will serve to enhance rather than detract from the beauty of the window.

I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several parts of my improvements in order to impart a full and clear understanding of the same but I do not desire to be understood as com fining myself to such construction and arrangement as such changes or modifications may be made in practice as fairly fall within the scope of the invention.

Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. The herein described device for clearing a room of flies comprising a Window sash, a pane so arranged in the sash that an opening is formed between its upper edge and the cross-bar of the sash, a rock shaft and a pendent plate connected with the rock shaft, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
