UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW J. TEWKSBURY, OF I'IAVERHILL, MASSACHUSETTS.
CIRCULAR KNIFE FOR LEATHER-SKIVING MACHINES.
SEEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 519,744, dated May 15, 1894.
Application filed August 24, 18 93.
or support in addition to the bearing which is afiorded by the shaft to which it is attached. In accordance with this invention a disk or circular plate is secured to said shaft, above the circular knife, having projecting downwardly from its under side a flange, and the circular knife has formed in its upper side an annular groove adapted to receive said flange, it bottoming in said groove. An upwardly projecting flange is preferably formed upon the upper side of said disk or plate which extends sufliciently high to form in conjunction with said disk or plate an oil retaining cup adapted to receive and retain oil which may follow down the shaft to which it is attached.
Figure 1, shows in plan view a rotary disk knife, and supplemental bearing therefor, embodying this invention; Fig. 2, a vertical section of the parts shown in Fig. l.
The circular knife a, is secured to the lower end of shaft 1). A circular disk or plate is shrunk or otherwise secured to said shaft b, above the knife at, having projecting downwardly from its under side a flange c, and projecting upwardly from its upper side a flange o. The flange 0 extends quite high, so
Serial No. 483,964. (No model.)
as to form in conjunction with the disk orplate, an oil retaining cup, adapted to receive and retain any oil which may follow down the shaft 6. An annular groove is formed in the upper side of the circular knife a, which receives the short flange c it bottoming in said groove. A supplemental bearing is thereby provided for the circular knife, which prevents its vibration on the shaft, and continually maintains it in its true position thereon.
I claim 1. A circular knife mounted on a shaft and provided with an annular groove on its upper side, in combination with a supplementary support for said knife also located on said shaft and consisting of a disk having upon its under side an annular flange 0' adapted to be seated in said annular groove, substantially ANDREW J. TEWKSBURY.
