JOHN P. KELLY, OF SACO, MAINE.
DEVICE FOR PLUMBING TOP-RAIL SPIN'NING-SPINDLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 519,716, dated May 15, 1894.
Application filed O t b 28, 1893. s ial No, 489,400. (N 0 model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN P. KELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saco, in the county of York and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Plumbing Top-Rail Sp1nn1ng-Spindles;and I do herebydeclarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,"such'as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. My invention relates to devices for plumbing'spindles and consists of two wedge shaped disks having a central bore of sufficient diameter to allow the passage of a spindle case therethrough. Said disks are superim posed one upon the other and interposed between the top of the rail and a shoulder on the outside of the spindle case. It further consists in means for rotating said disks upon each other and around said spindle case.
In the drawings herewith accompanying and making a part of this specification, Figure 1 is an elevation of a spindle and rail with my improved plumbing device attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of my plumbing device. Fig. 3' is an elevation of the same in such position that the thickest parts are opposite each other, and Fig. 4 is an elevation of the same showing the thickest parts brought together.
The spindle case passes through a hole in the rail and is supported in the rail'by a shoulder on the case resting on the rail, which construction is shown in Letters Patent of the United States No.- 47 3,214, granted to William B. Douglas April 19, 1892.
Same letters refer to like parts.
In said drawings a represents ,the rail, b the spindle case, and c a shoulder on said case adapted to support the spindle case in the ra l. Interposed between said shoulder and said rail are wedge shaped disks (1 having central bore 6 through which the spindle case projects and upon which said shoulder rests. These disks are interposed between said rail and said shoulder, one upon the other. It is found in the practice'of the art of spinning that it is of the utmost importance that the spindle case be always perpendicular and, therefore, it becomes a matter 'of great importance to have some convenient means for putting said case in proper position.
The operation of my improved device is as follows: The disks being wedge-shaped, when the thickest parts thereof are opposite each other, as seen in Fig. 1, the upper face of the one on top and the lower face of the under one will be parallel, and consequently, it the top of the rail is horizontal, the spindle case resting thereon will be perpendicular, but if the top of the rail be not horizontal, the spindle case may be set in a perpendicular position by turning said disks so that the thick, parts will come together between the shoul der and that part of the rail which is depressed below the horizontal, as seen in Fig. 4, said disks being turned more or less according to the amount of depression of the rail below the horizontal. Any convenient means may be employed for rotating said disks, as for example, ears f attached to the outer edges of said disks. For convenience, the cars should be attached to the thickest parts of v saiddisks. I
The advantages of my improved plumbing combination with a spindle case having a projecting shoulder thereon and a supporting rail, of wedge shaped disks having central bores, said disks being superimposed and interposed between said rail and said shoulder and adapted to rotate around said case, and means for rotating said disks, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 9th day of October, A. D. 1893.
JOHN P. KELLY.
Witnesses:
NATHAN CLIFFORD, GRACE G. POLLARD.
