HORIZONTAL SWING.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 691,494, dated January 21, 1902.

Be it known that I, CHARLES A. SCHINDLER, Jr., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of West Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Horizontal Swing, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved horizontal swing which is simple and durable in construction, not liable to get out of order, and arranged to insure an easy turning of the rope-supporting frame.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claim.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.
Figure l is a perspective view of the improvement, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the same.
On the upper end of a suitable post A is secured a flanged head or cap B, on which is mounted to turn a hub C, carrying rope-supporting arms D, from the free ends of which extend ropes E, adapted to be taken hold of by children to actuate the swing in the usual manner. The upper face of the head or cap B forms a bearing-surface B and from the center of the head or cap a conical pin B2 projects. The pin B2 is engaged near the upper Vand lower ends by balls F F', mounted to turn in horizontal raceways arranged in the hub C, as is plainly indicated in Fig. 2, and the horizontal bearing-surface B is engaged near its outer edge by balls F2, also held in a raceway arranged in the under side of the hub C, as is plainly shown in Fig. 2.
By the arrangement of the ball-bearings as described and shown in Fig. 2 the hub C turns freely on the bearing-plate B' and the pin B2, so that even if the horizontal turning frame, consisting of the ropes E, the arms D, and the hub C, is lowered on but one side there is no danger of said frame binding on the head, as the balls above mentioned will prevent any binding and undue friction, and consequently the frame readily turns and carries the children around. A washer G is held on the upper end of the pin B2 to prevent upward sliding of the hub O on the pin B2.
By making the hub C and the head B single castings it is evident that the device can be cheaply constructed and at the same time combine durability with strength.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In ahorizontalswing,a hanged cap adapted to tit upon the upper end of a support and provided with a pin projecting from its upper face, and a hub mounted to turn on the pin and to the upper face of which radial arms are adapted to be rigidly secured, said hub being formed with horizontal ball-raceways at the upper and lower portions of the opening through which the pin passes and with an annular ball-raceway on its under side, as set forth.
