SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters'Patent No. 519,556, dated May 8, 1894.

' is to produce a blank for such ashoe wherein the major portion of the shoe is cut from a single piece of leather with less waste than in shoes of this type as now made, and whereby a durable, neat and well shaped shoe may be produced.

In the drawings, Figure 1, is a plan view of the blank. Fig. 2, is a side view showing the blank ready for the last.

In making this blank I cut the leather upon substantially the lines shown in Fig. 1,where A indicates the vamp; B, B designate the counters which are separated from the central portion G, which forms the front by the two lines on the. side thereof, substantially straight as shown, thus forming thefront boundary strips of the openingfor the goring as shown in Fig. 2. Extending about midway of the severed portions G, are two slits terminating preferably in the curved slits near or at the instep, which latter slits, it will be observed, merge into the side slits which separate the side portions G from the side counters.) Out in this way the front strip,D, is formed with the two front gore strips attached thereto and extending along each side thereof. When these parts are placed in position for the last and shaped, a space, K, of

substantially trapezoidal form is made on each side of the instep, which spaces are to be filled in with separate pieces of leather or other material, preferably of the lighter grade than themain body of the shoe. For this purpose kid, kangaroo, or patent leather, may be employed, and different colors may be used in these pieces if desired.

It'is obvious that I may cut the leather from a single thickness, as"shown,0r I may double the leather and cut the two sidesat one time, since both sides of the blank are symmetrical with reference to a central line; and any suitable ineans may of course be employed for cutting the material, whether by hand or by machinery. A shoe made from this blank presents a neat appearance, and owing to the fact that there are fewer seams than in shoes of this kind ordinarily made, it is very durable.

The rear portion G of the goring openings may be formed of a single piece of material suitably shaped, or of two pieces meeting at the back in the usual manner. Elastics are fitted as goring in the openings shown, and the shoe may be finished by suitable ornamentation and proper stitching as de sired. It will be observed that the blank I have described and shown, is composed of' the vamp, counters, and front, all in one piece, whereby there is no loss of material whatever in forming these parts; and I find that with such a blank the shoe can be'readily and easily shaped and by experience the saving is found to be about ten per cent.

I claim as my invention- The herein described integral shoe blank, consisting of the vamp, A, counters, B, B, of sufficient length to meet at the back of the heel, withthe front,strip, D, forming, in conjunction with the counters and the front gore pieces attached to the said strip and secured to the counters, the trapezoidal openings, K,
