Description

(No Model.)
R.. D, GOODLYETT.
Patentedlvlayl, 1894.
f f I rnfrES MATCH-SAFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 518,994, dated May 1, 1894.
Application iiled May 9,1893. Serial No. 473,513. (No model.)
To LZZ whom it may concern: r
Be it known that I, ROBERT I).-GOODLETT, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Match-Safes, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a match safe with efficient means for withdrawing the matches one at a time, to automatically accomplish the ignition of the match when in the act of being withdrawn, to protect the flame of lthe match, and to combine.
in one compact pocket article a match safe, a pin cushion, a mirror and a writing tablet. Each of these objects I fully accomplish by my invention.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the match safe. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section. Fig.3 is an end elevation. Fig. 4 is a Vertical section on line 4-4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a modification partly broken away and in section.
A is the compartment for the reception of matches, having on its sides a mirror@ and a writing tablet b. Between the end walls c and d and near the bottom f are tw converging plates g and g. The end wall d is provided at its lower end with a perforation h of a size sufficient to permit the free passage of one match at a time. The side Walls with the mirror and writing tablet and the top wall e, part of which is arranged as asliding lid, are extended beyond the wall d, and between the side walls is arranged a plate k, thus providing another compartment which is iilled in with a suitable material to form a pin-cushion B. A chamber moreover is thus left between the plate k, the lower ends of the side walls and end wall d, which is open at the bottom and one end to form an igniting chamber as hereinafter explained. Within this chamber and attached to the wall d is a spring cover m for the perforation h which is provided with an operating rod fn. The lower end of the covermwhich is turned up, is ser rated or roughened, and projects within a shortvdistance of a serrated extension f of the bottom f. Both of these roughened ends form igniting surfaces for the matches.
The operation is as follows: The lid c is `opened and the matches are put in the compartment with the prepared ends outward.
Those near the bottom are confined between the converging plates g and g in such a way that only one match at a time can occupy the space between the lower edges 0f these plates, and this match has its unprepared end directly opposite the perforation h. When it is desired to withdraw a match the rod fn. is pushed in and the box is tilted so that the bottom match slides freely out and within grasp of the fingers. It is then drawn out and as its prepared end passes between the serrated surfaces of the extension f and the cover m the match is ignited. The ignited end of the match may be then held within the igniting chamber where it is thoroughly protected from the wind, and a cigar or pipe may be easily lighted from the burning match while thus protected.
In the modification shown in Fig. 5 the spring cover m and operating rod fn. are made in one piece from spring metal.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A match safe comprising a receptacle for matches having converging side plates near its bottom, and in one end Wall a perforation between the converging side plates, and an igniting chamber outside of said end wall, substantially as set forth.
2. A match safe comprising a receptacle for `matches having an opening at one end for the withdrawal of the matches, an igniting chamber communicating with said receptacle through Saidopening-and a movable cover for said opening having an igniting surface for the matches, substantially as set forth.
8. A match safe comprising a receptacle for matches having an opening at one end for the withdrawal `of the matches,-an igniting chamber communicating with said receptacle.
through said opening, and a hinged cover for IOC niting chamber being a mirror and the other side Wall thereof being a Writing tablet, sub- Io stantially as set forth.
ROBERT D. GOODLETT.
