' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEODORE F. W. SCHMIDT, OF DAYTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO THE DAYTON PAPER'NOVELTY COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
PAPER Box.
SFEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 0. 518,898, dated April 24, 1894.
' Application filed December 18,1393. 1 Serial No. 423,909. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, THEODORE F. W. SCHMIDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and-State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes,
of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a 'polygonally sided box which may be'cheaply 'rnade, folded and closed so as to be nearly impervious tothe action of air and moisture,
with the coverings or closing ends of the shape and size to correspond in contour with the box; the box being of such. construction that it may be folded flat for shipment.
The various features of my invention are fully set forth in the description of the accoinpanyingdrawings making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan of my improved box folded fiat for shipment. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the upper end of the box in position for filling. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the same with the flaps partly folded.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of one end of the blank.
Thebox consists of a hexagonalreceptacle formed from an oblong paper blank which is scored transversely near its ends, as at 1, 1, and is also scored longitudinally, as at 2, 2, the longitudinal scores equaling in number the corners of the completed blank. The blank at one edge is provided witha flap 3,
Fig. 3, which is adapted to overlap the oppointo tubular form upon the scored lines 2 2,
and the flap 3 pasted to the opposite edge or fiap of the blank. The tetragonalflaps a at one end are then folded inward, the hexag- After the blank has been scored and onal flap b is folded over the flaps a. and the tetragonal flaps n are folded upon the'flap b, after which the flap 0 is folded over the flaps b and n. The box may now be filled with the material it is designed to hold and the opposite end closed in the same manner. The end flaps may be secured by mucilage, cord, or rubber bands, or in any other sultable manner as may be most convenient. If the flaps are secured together by paste or other adhesive, the box will be practically air tight, but owing to the thickness of the several layers composing the end closures the box will be sufficiently air tight to answer the purpose for which most paper boxes are employed.
To transport the boxes, pressure is applied to one of the edges so as to flatten it outinto the shape shown in Fig. 2, and the boxes packed one upon another, the end flaps being straightened out as shown in Fig. 1.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:-
1. A box formed from a blank scored longitudinally, as at 2, 2, and transversely near its ends, as at 1, 1, and having at one edge a flap 3 overlapping the opposite edge .of the blank and pasted thereto, two side sections of said blank being provided with hexagonal flaps b, c, and the remaining sections having each a tetragonal flap of substantially half the length of the flaps b, c, said fiap's being folded, substantially as shown and described.
2. A hexagonal box formed from a blank scored longitudinally, as at 2, 2, and transversely near its ends, as at 1, 1, and provided at one edge with a flap 3 overlapping the opposite edge of the blank and pasted thereto, two side sections of said blank being provided with hexagonal flaps b, c, and the remaining sections having each a tetragonal flap of sub-- stantially half the length of the flapsb, c,
said flaps being turned inward and secured together by paste, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
THEODORE F. W. SCHMIDT. Witnesses:
JOHN L. H. FRANK, Gno. W. FRANK.
