R. R. GIBBS 1115 FOR GUTTING SOLBS.
Patented Apr. 24, 1894.
WITN ESS ES: mvEN' oR i %Z% 1 ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT Oregon.
ROBERT R. GIBBS, OF UTIOA, NEW YORK.
DIE FOR CUTTING SOLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 518,696, dated April 24,1894.
Application filed August 22, 1893. $erial1lo. 483.722. (No model.)
To aZZ whom itmay concern.-
Be it known that 1, ROBERT E. GIBBS, of Utica, in the county of Oneida, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dies for Cutting Soles, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to dies for cutting soles for boots or shoes, the cutters being adjustable laterally, to cut the different widths of each size direct from the race without first cutting out a sole blank and then trimming it to shape. a
My object is to produce a sole-cutting die, constructed in sectional parts and comprising side cutters and toe and heel cutters, one or both of the side cutters being adjustable with relation to the toe and heel cutters so as to adjust the die for cutting all of the widths of the sole of a given size direct from the race, ready for use without any trimming to shape the ends or sides, and thus accomplishing with one die and its adjustments, all that has heretofore required a separate die for each size and each width of sole; said die being also adapted to cut insoles.
My invention consists in the several novel features of construction and operation hereinafter described and which is specifically set forth in the claims hereunto annexed. It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1, is a top plan of the die. Fig. 2, is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3, is an end elevation thereof. Fig. 4,isa transverse vertical section on line X X in Fig. 2.
The body consists of two longitudinal sections a and athe upper faces of which are provided with dovetailed grooves which receive the tongues or tenons b of the plates -c and c said tongue and groove joints being the means for detachably mounting said plates upon said body sections. The side cutters or knives -d-d'-- are detachably secured upon said plates, as by the screws shown in Fig. 4E. The operation of these is to cut out the sides of the sole, or insole,
but as they, alone, would leave a connection between the race and the sole, I provide the heel and toe cutters -e-e' to serve these connections, each of these cutters being secured to one side cutter by a screw -h and. to the other by the slot and screw -h', each heel and toe cutter overhanging inwardly so as to overlap the ends of the side cutters and yet bring all of the cutting edges into proper alignment, so 'asto wholly sever the solo from the race.
The bod y sections --a-ot are bored transversely and suitably threaded to receive the screws -m-m--, said screws being each provided with the shoulders and grooves nand n being a set screw inserted through the body, its point entering the groove. Each of these adjusting screws is provided with a worm gear -0"-- and r is a shaft provided with worms s engaging said gears, and jonrnaled in brackets --s.
Bars t connect the ends of the body sections, adj ustably, by means of the slot and pin connection --t-- which are adapted to be loosened and then tightened after the cutters are adjusted to cut the width desired, such adjustment being efiected by rotating the shaft -r'.
i What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A cutting die comprising a longitudinally sectional body, plates removably mounted upon the sections, side cutters mounted upon said plates, heel andtoe cutters connected to said side cutters, adjusting screws inse rted through said body sections, and means to rotate said screws.
2. A cutting die comprising a longitudinally sectional body, side cutters mounted upon said sections, heel and toe cutters mounted upon and overlapping the side cutters, and means to adjust the body sections laterally.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand on this 28th day of July, 1893.
ROBERT R. GIBBS.
In presence of- ALBERT J. SEATON,
CHARLES H. HASTINGS.
