SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 518,509 dated April 17, 1894.

Be it known that I, CLARENCE W. MOORE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Peabody, in the county of Essexand State of Massachusetts, have invented new and use fullmprovements in Block-Fasteners for Boot or Shoe Lasts, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in block fasteners for boot and shoe lasts and it is carried out as follows reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1, represents a top plan view of the invention showing the last block removed. Fig. 2, represents a longitudinal section on the line 22 in Fig. 1 showing the block locked in position on the last. Fig. 3, represents a cross section on the line 33 shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4, representsa detail perspectiVe View of the improved block fastener; and Fig. 5, represents the hooked handle by means of which the block fastener isunlocked and the block removed from the last.

Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.

A represents a boot or shoe last of any suitable size or shape and B represents the detachable last block as usual.

In the upper portion of the last A is made a recess C in which is pivoted at d a spring pressed locking lever D which is actuated by means of a leaf spring E having one end secured in a notch in the lever, and the other end bearing against the bottom wall of the recesses C to force the hooked upper end D of the lever upward into engagement with a tooth b rigidly secured to the upper end of removable last block. The locking lever D is provided at or near its upper end with a laterally projecting lip or car D" which when depressed by any suitable tool causes the hooked end D to be disengaged from the last block tooth I), thus permitting the last block to be removed from thelast. Above the place Where the lip or ear D is arranged I make in the last block B a perforation F which is coincident with the laterally projecting lip or ear D as shown in Fig. 3.

In connection with this my improved last block fastener I use any suitable releasing or detaching tool and for this purpose I have shownin Fig. 5 a shank or handle G having a hooked end 9 which latter is adapted to be inserted in the last block perforation F when the last block is to be removed from the last, and for this purpose it is only necessary to depress the ear D by means of the hooked end 9 of the tool G until the hooked end D on the pivoted lever D is disengaged from the last projection 11, when the last block may easily be detached simply by pulling it away with the tool G.

To attach the last block to its last it is only necessary to move its forward end into its proper position on the last and to depress the rear end of said last block against the last until the hooked end D on the spring pressed locking leverD interlocks with the tooth b, on the last block B as fully shown in Fig. 2.

Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I

wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim- The combination with a last having a recess C in its upper side, and a removable last block B provided at its "upper end portion with a tooth b, and a vertically arranged orifice F, of a lever D pivoted in the recess of the last and having a hooked upper end Dto engage said tooth, and a laterally projecting lip or ear D arranged coincident with the said orifice so that an instrument insertedthrough the latter will act on the lip or ear to disengage the hooked end of the lever from the tooth, and a spring E having one end secured to the lever and the other end bearing against the bottom wall of the recess for moving the hooked end of the lever upward into engagement with the tooth, substantially as shown and described.
