GEORGE A. REYNOLDS,
UNITED STATES} PATENT OFFICE.
or UTIOA, NEW YORK.
LAST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,913, dated February 19, 1884. Application filed December 20, 1883. (No model.)
.To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. REYNOLDS, 'of the city of Utica, Oneida county, in the- State of New York, a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lasts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figuresmarked thereon 1 My invention and improvement relates to that class of mechanism consisting of a metallic last constructed in two parts, and the manner and method of attaching the same together,
1 and of expanding and depressing the upper surface thereof.
A patent was graned to Edward S. Kingston for a metallic last constructed in two parts, and is No. 273,108, of which I am now the sole owner by assignments from the patentee.
My invention relates to an improvement in attaching the two portions or parts of the last together at the toe, and in the method of expanding the upper portion and holding the same rigid when in use, and of lowering the same when the last is to be withdrawn from the shoe or boot.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the last. Fig. 2 rep- 0 resents a section of the last with my improvements attached. Fig. 3 represents the rear elevation of my improvement. Fig. 4 represents the rear elevation of a movable support. Fig. 5 represents a top view of the same. Fig.
. 3 5 6 represents a side View of the same. Fig. 7
represents a top view of a section of my last, representing the method of attaching the upper section to the lower section. Fig. 8 represents an end view of the lower section of the last.
A represents the lower section of my metallic last. 13 represents the upper section of the same. Dotted lines (represented by G) represent the, upper section of the last when expanded.. i
D represents the metallic posts or guides at-' tached to the lower sections of the last by screw, bolt, or rivet, or'may be cast in connection with the same, and are from a quarter to a half an inch apart, according to the wishes of the manufacturer, and about two inches in length. The upper portions of the posts are attached by rivet or screw, or may be formed by casting the same together, and are adapted ter to a half an inch beyond the surface of the same, as indicated in Fig. 4., and are adapted to fit against posts D, as indicated in Fig. 2. Upon the rear is an extension-arm substantially at right angles and adapted to fit between posts D, and when inserted the projecting end is turned at right angles, as indicated in Fig. 3, and is designed to regulate the forward movement of the support and to keep the same in place.
6 represents the support E.
' 6 represents the rear projection or stop with a right-angled bend adapted to hold the stop or support and to prevent the same from slipping out of place, and so constructed that when the toe of the last is turned downward and the top surface, 13, is extended, the support will drop forward and allow A and B to be com.- pressed, so that the last can be removed from the shoe; and when in use the supportcanbe put in place by turning the heel of the last downward and extending A and B, and forms a solid metallic support to the two surfaces of the last.
F represents a projecting surface of the upper portion of the last, and is dovetailed into the lower section.
F represents the dovetailed slot on the toe of the lower section of the last, and is designed to receive the dovetailed flange on the upper surface of the last and to hold the same loose- 'l.y to allow the vertical motion of B, as indicated in Fig. 1, and to hold the same from slipping out of place when in use, and adapted at the same time to give a smooth and even '"s'fii 'fa'ceto thei'i the last,
