DEVICE FOR SUSPENDING STOVE-LIFTERS, 80c.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 518,174, dated April 10, 1894.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, OZRA J. BALDWIN, residing at Youngsville, in the county of Warren, and JAMEs L. KERSTETTER, residing at Bradford,in the county of McKean, State of Pennsylvania, citizens of the United States, haveinventedcertain newand useful Improvements in Devices for Suspending Stove-Lifters, &c.; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention; such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specificationJ Our invention has relation to a device for suspending any utensil, such as a pot lifter or stove cover lifter in a position to be readily and conveniently taken hold of by a person when it is desired to use said utensil, and our device is also equally well adapted for use as a chalk carrier in billiard rooms, and among the objects in view is to provide a simple, inexpensive and convenient device whereby any kitchen utensil may be suspended or carried above the stove in position to be used when necessary or desirable, and whereby a piece of chalk may be suspended or carried in a position above a billiard table for ready use when desired. Thus, by our improved device, the article suspended thereby is always at hand to be at once used when desired and the frequent misplacement or loss thereof prevented.

With the above and other objects in view, our invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts, all as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claim.

pending device, and the same comprises a horizontally arranged shaft, E, upon which is mounted a pulley, 0. Upon said shaft at either side of said pulley is mounted a flange or disk, D, and said parts are adapted to be suspended from the ceiling of a room or other support by a hanger of any desired construction, but preferably by the construction of hanger shown in Figs. 1, Zand 3. B, shown in said figures consists of-a piece of wire bent to form the vertical arms, (9, and twisted together, as at b, from which point extends rearwardly the forked or bifurcated portion, b through which latter are adapted to be passed screws, H, for securing the hanger to the ceiling, as shown. The lower ends of the arms, b, are formed into loops or eyes, b which loosely encircle the outer ends of the shaft, E, whereby the latter is free to turn within said eyes.

I indicates a cord which is adapted to wind upon and unwind, from the pulley, C, and from the lower end of said cord is suspended any desired article, such as set forth in the statement of ourinvention. For the purpose of illustration, we show suspended therefrom (in Figs. 4 and 5) a stove cover lifter K.

Upon the hubs, F, are adapted to wind the ends of a cord, J, which passes through perforations in a plate or strip, N, and to which latter is secured a counterbalancing weight, L (as shown in Figs.4 and 5).

For the purpose of preventing the cord, J, from becoming twisted or entangled about the cord, I, when the device is in use, we provide the weight, L, with a screw-eye, Z, or similar device through which passes the cord, 1. Thus the latter cord is maintained apart from the cord, J, and any tendency of the two cords to become twisted or entangled together will be prevented by the peculiar and novel manner of arranging the said cords, as more clearly shown in Fig. 1. The weight, L, should be sufficiently heavy to counterbalance the lifter, K, piece of chalk or other article suspended, and maintain the same at a point sufficiently above the stove or billiard table, as the case may be, to be out of the way and yet be within easy reaching distance of the operator.

For the purpose of preventing the article suspended being drawn .up too high, we provide the cord, I, with a ball, M, or other suitable device of sufficient size to be prevented from passing through the eye, Z, against which it strikes when the cord, I, is being drawn upwardly by the weight, L.

c is an opening in one of the flanges of pulley, O,through which opening maybe passed the end of the cord, I, before the same is wound upon the said pulley, and d is a horizontal opening formed in said pulley through which the cord, J, is passed, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.

It will be noticed that the cord, I, and the ends of the cord, J, are reversely wound upon the pulley, O, and hubs, F, respectively, so that in operation, when the suspended article is pulled downwardly and the cord, I, unwinds from its pulley, the ends of cord, J, will wind upon the hubs, F, and when the said article is released the weight, L, will cause the ends of cord,J, to unwind from the hubs and cause the cord,I, to be wound upon the pulley until the ball, M, strikes against the eye, Z, when the parts will remain at rest,

In the modified construction of our device, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the principle of operation is the same as that embodied in the construction shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, but in the modified construction there is but one flange, D, employed, upon the hub, F, on which is adapted to wind the cord, J. For the purpose of guiding the cord,l, uniformly upon the pulley, C, we here employ a guide, M, which is bent to form the arms, m, which at their upper ends are formed into loops or eyes which loosely encircle the ends of the shaft, E, and said guide is also bent to form a loop or eye, m, at a point below the pulley, G, and through which eye passes the cord, I. The hanger here employed for suspending the parts from a ceiling, or other support, consists of the bail, B, to which is pivotally connected by means of a pivot stud or bolt, g, the portion, G, of the hanger, which has diverging arms which terminate in horizontal portions, g, through which are adapted to pass the screws, H, for securing the hanger to the ceiling. The lower ends of the arms of the bail, B, serve to revolubly support the ends of the shaft, E, which has its bearings therein. The operation of this form of our device is the same as that described with reference to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the cord, J, winding upon the hub, F, when the cord, I, is pulled downwardly, and the Weight, L, causing the cord, J, to unwind from the hub and wind the cord, I, upon the pulley when the lifter, K, piece of chalk or other article is released. Through the opening, 0, in the flange of the pulley the end of the cord, I, may be passed before the same is wound upon said pulley, and the opening, cl, in the flange, D, serves a similar purpose for the end of cord, J.

What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a device of the class described, the combination with a hanger B consisting of Wire bent to form the depending arms I), having eyes b at their lower ends, said wire being twisted at the point I) and bent to form the horizontal looped portion W, a screw or the like passed through said looped portion and securing the same to a ceiling,ashaftmounted in the eyes 11 flanges upon said shaft and having hubs, a cord having its ends wound upon said hubs, a second cord reversely wound upon a hub intermediate the ends of the other cord,a bar through which passes the first mentioned cord, a counterbalance suspended from said cord, an eye secured to said counterbalance through which eye said second cord passes, and a lifter, piece of chalk or other article suspended from the latter cord, as described.
