NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMIL F. TUBACH, OF DUSHORE, PENNSYLVANIA.
DEVICE FOR PACKING FURNITURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 518,167, dated April 10, 1894. PP filed December 27, 1893. $erial No. 494,864. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMIL F. TUBACH, a citi- Furniture; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to the class of packing furniture, and especially to new and use ful devices for packing the side rails of bedsteads for storing or for shipping purposes, so that the finished surfaces will be protected from chafing or otherwise becoming marred, as would be the case if the side pieces were permitted to rub against one another. Iaim to improve upon this class of inventions,
which have been patented, and I produce means which are Very simple in construction, inexpensive and of easy application to themticles of furniture.
My invention consists in the novel construction and adaptation of the parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
I clearly illustrate myinvention in the annexed drawings, which with the letters of reference marked thereon form a part of this specification, like letters of reference indi-' cating like parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure l, is a perspective View of a pair of side bedstead rails held in a position for transportation, by my improved packing blocks; Fig. 2, a view showing the metallic side rail hooks, of ordinary construction, and Fig. 3, are detail views of the packing blocks.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A, A, represent the side rails of a bedstead, in the ends of which are seated the metallic supporting hooks B, with the obliquely inclined hook engaging portion 1). v
C is a block of wood having the longitudinal slits o, 0, one being provided for each side rail for packing, and the said blocks, in packing the rails for transportation, are placed over the hook engaging members b, and then a second block or blocks D having a recess or recesses 61, one for each side rail cut slantingly in the said block, so as to conform to and wedge under the hooks I). These slits in the block D are cut transversely to the grain, and the slits in the block 0 are with the grain of the wood preferably. The block D is therefore securely wedged under the member b, the block D bearing against the surface of the block 0, and then to secure the blocks in a locking position, a nail or screw F, is set in as shown at f.
By thisform of construction, it will bereadily seen that the side rails are protected from being marred, and owing to the simplicity of the construction of the packing blocks they can be easily applied.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The blocks for packing furniture, as described, consisting of a block havinga series of longitudinal slots which are adapted to receive the hooks of a series of side rails of bedsteads, portions of the block bearing against the sides and upper edges of the said hooks, and, extending above the edges of the side rails, a second block having beveled slots (1 for engagement with the tapering edges of the hooks, as described, and pins for retaining the blocks in their relative looking position, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimonywhereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
