RAIL JOINT CHAIR.

RAILJOINT CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Aljanteirted Auen 18, 1.91/1.
Application iled January 7, 19111. Serial No. 810,803.
To all ell/0m it may concern;
Be it known that l, vlllf'rcnmiu J. McKen- Zi'n, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Nederland, in the county of jonlder and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joint Chairs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in rail joint chairs and has for its primary object to provide a rail joint chair which will be of extremely simple construction and operation and which will include a wedge member which serves to draw together', the parts of the rail joint chair and cause the same to clamp the rail ends secured in said chair.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which will be constructed in such manner that as the parts are forced together, the wedge member will draw downwardly upon the sections of the rail joint chair and at the same time, force the rail ends upwardly7 thereby securely clamping the rail ends in position and preventing movement of the same as the wheels of the rolling stock pass over the oint.
A further object is to generally improve and simplify the construction and operation of devices-of this character and increase the efliciency of the same, without increasing the cost of manufacture thereof.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view through my device in use; and Fig. 2 is a lragmentary side elevational view of one of the rail joint chair members, looking at the inner face thereof.
Referring more specifically to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 and 2 designate the rail joint chair members which include the upstanding portions 3 for engagement against the web portions of the rail ends l and the lower portions 5 for engagement upon opposite sides of the base portions of said rail ends.
The base portion G of the rail joint chair member 1 is of such width as to extend beneath the entire base portions of the rail` ends d and has its upper face inclined transversely, the purpose of which will presently appear, The rail joint chair member 1 also has its under face cut away along its free or inner longitudinal edge to form a channel 7 to receive the narrow base portion 8 of the rail joint chair member 2.
It will be understood that the upstanding or web engaging portions of the rail joint chair members 1 and 2 are provided with the usual bolt openings 9 to receive the bolts 10 for drawing together said rail oint chair members and causing the same to clamp and hold together, the rail ends 41.
In order to draw the rail joint chair members 1 and 2 tightly against opposite sides of the web portion of the rail ends 4- as the nuts 11 are tightened upon the bolts 10, l have provided a wedge member 12 positioned beneath the base portions of the rail. ends 4l and resting upon the inclined upper face of the base portion 6 of the rail joint chair member 1, which wedge member 12 will also serve to force the rail ends 4L upwardly as the wedge member 12 is forced to proper position by the drawing together of the rail joint chair members 1 and 2, said wedge member 12 riding upwardly upon the inclined upper face of the base portion 6.
The rail joint chair members 1 and 2 have the outwardly directed perforated flanges 13 to receive the usual railway spikes 14;. The rail joint chair members 1 and 2 are also provided with the downwardly directed perforated flanges 15 between the outwardly directed perforated flanges 13 and. adapted for engagement between the ties 16. The downwardly directed perforated. flanges 15 are adapted to receive the bolts 17 extended transversely beneath the rail ends l. and the rail joint chair members 1 and 2 and are adapted to draw toward one another the "ail joint chair members 1 and 2 and retain the same in proper relation to one another and to the rail ends 4.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have provided a rail joint chair which will be of extremely simple construction and operation and which will securely clamp the rail ends in position and prevent movement of the same by wheels of the rolling stock passing over the joint. Further, it will be clearly apparent that, owing to the wedge member, and the construction of the rail joint chair members, they will not be loosened and thereby allow play of the rail ends by the strain to Which they are subjected by rolling stock passing over the joint, as is the case with the forms of rail joint chairs now in general use. j
lhile have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, it Will be understood that minor changes in the details oi construction and arrangement of parts may be made Within the scope of the appended claims Without departing from the spirit oit my .invention or sacrificing any oi the advantages of the same.
What l .claim is l. A device oi' the class described comprising a rail joint chair member having an upstanding portion and a base portion provided With an inclined upper face, a 'Wedge member positioned upon said inclined upper face, a second' rail joint chair member having an upstanding portion and a base portion, the upstanding portions of the rail joint chair members being adapted for engagement with the opposite faces oi the web portions of meeting rail ends, the upstanding portion of the second member being also adapted to bear against one edge of said Wedge member, and means for sebase portion being provided with a channel N along its inner lovver longitudinal edge, a second rail joint chair member having an opstanding portion and a base portion, said f base portion being adapted tor engagement in said channel in the base portion of the l `first member, the upstanding portions of f the rail joint chair members being adapted i'or engagement with opposite faces of. the j web portions of meeting rail ends, a Wedge l member positioned upon the inclined upper lface oi. the base kportion of the first memtbei, and means for securing the upstanding portions oiE the rail joint chair members against the meeting rail ends. in testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
