Be it known that I, WALTER HUBBARD, of Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Inkstands; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be afull, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-

My invention relates to an improvement in inkstands, the object being to produce a sim# ple and convenient device of a highly ornamental character.

With these ends in view, my invention consists in an ink-stand having certain details of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

In carrying out my invention, I construct a rectangular socket-plate having a rectangular depression A, conforming in size to the size of the ink-well which it receives, and a raised border. B, which bypreference is highly ornamented. Instead of making the depression rectangular form, and preferably composed of onyX, marble, or some other ornamental material, the said bed being supported upon a depressed flange D, formed around the four sides of the upper portion of the base D,which is itself supported upon four feet D', located at its corners. The socket-plate before mentioned is provided with a centrally depending hub E, longitudinally counter-bored, and internally threaded to receive a coupling-screw F, which passes upward into it through the central opening of a circular retaining boss Gr, formed in the center of the upper face of a binding-plate G', which is located within the base D, and obscured from view. The upwardly extending boss G before mentioned fits into a circular chamber or recess C formed in the under face of the bed C, the said bed also being constructed with acentral opening C2, for the downward passage through it of the hub or Apost E.

By reference to Fig. 2 of the drawings it will readily be seen that the socket-plate is held against lateral displacement upon the bed by means of the post E, that the bed is held against lateral displacement by the basel D into `which its lower edge fits, and that the binding-plate Gr is held against displacement- I construct it at each corner with a diagonally arranged flat bearing d, flanked at each end by a lug d d. Under this construction the corners of the plate rest upon the said bearings, while the edges of the said corners engage with the said lugs which conne the plate in right position against lateral movement, and so supplement the restraining influence of the upwardly projecting boss G of the plate.

My improved ink-stand is easy to make and assemble, is convenient in use, and rich and attractive in appearance. By varying the materials and design, a wide range of effects may be produced.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In an ink-stand, the combination with a socket-plate having al central depression, a raised edge or border and a centrally depending longitudinally bored post or hub, of a bed upon which the said socket-plate rests, a base receiving the said bed in its upper portion, a binding-plate located Within the base, and a coupling-screw passing through the said plate and entering the post or hub depending from the socket-plate,`substantially as set forth.

2. In an ink-stand, the combination with a socket-plate having a central depression to receive an ink-Well, araised border conining the well against lateral displacement, and a centrally depending longitudinally bored hub or post, a bed upon which the said plate rests, constructed with a central opening for the downward passage of the hub or post of the plate, and with a circular chamber entering it from its lower face, a base adapted to have the said bed set into it, a binding-plate located Within the base and constructed with an upwardly projecting circular boss entering 15 the chamber formed in the lower face of the bed, and a coupling-screw passing through the center of the said boss into the said post or hub, substantially as described.
