JURGEN FRERIGHS, OF GILMAN, ILLINOIS- CHIMNEY-REGULATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N0. 517,919, dated April 10, 1894. Application filed December 5, 1893. Serial No. 492,84 (No model.)
To a whom it may concern.- I
Be it known that I, JURGEN FRERICHS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gilman, in the county of Iroquois and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney- Regulators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in chimney draft regulators and its object is to provide a device of this kind which will be simple and cheap in construction and efficient in operation; and to these ends it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a chimney draftregulator constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the interior construction the outer parts being shown by dotted lines.
In the said drawings, the reference letter A designates the flue box, which is shown asbeing rectangular in cross section, and of a size corresponding with the chimney to which it is to be applied. To the top of this flue box is secured a plate B, to the upper side of which is secured a conical pipe 0, through which the draft passes.
The letterD designates a vertical rod mounted in brackets d, d, secured to the upper and lower ends respectively,of the flue box. Above the pipe 0, the rod D is provided with a vertically movable cone frustum E, which acts as a draft deflector. Above said deflector E, is a funnel shaped hood or cover F, likewise vertically movable on said rod, and above the top of this cover or hood is a bracket G, which consists of a metal plate having its ends bent at right-angles forming short parallel arms g,
pipe 0, and cut ofl the draft.
g, provided with apertures through which rod D loosely passes, so that the bracket is slidable thereon. The lower arm of the bracket is formed with anextension g, with which is connected a rod K. This rod passes through a guide L, secured to plate B and extends to within a sufficient distance of the ground where it can be conveniently reached and operated by hand. The rod D at its upper end is provided with ahead H, to limit the upward movement of bracket G.
The letter P designates a coiled spring encircling the rod D, its lower endresting on the upper bracket 61 and its upper end supporting the deflector E and hood F.
The draft will be in the direction of the arrows shown in Fig. 2 and should the chimney take fire itcan be instantly extinguished by pulling down on rod K, which causes the deflector E, to close the mouth of the conical After the fire is extinguished, rod K is released when the coiled spring restores the parts to their original positions.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- In a draft regulator for chimneys, the combination with the flue box A, plate B, conical pipe 0 and vertical rod D, of the deflector E, loosely mounted on said rod, the hood or cover F, also loosely mounted on said rod, the coiled spring encircling rod D and interposed between plate B anddeflector E, the'vertically slidable bracket G, and the rod K, substantially as described. I
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JURGEN FRERIOHS.
