ITED STATES PATENT Garten;
JAMES C.-SHAW, OF HANNIBAL, MISSOURI.`
FEED-WATER-PIPE HEATER.
, SPECIFICATION forming part of `Letters Patent No. 517,771, dated April 3, 1894.
Application iiled January 31, 1894. Serial No. 498,666. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom, it may concern:
Beit known 'thatL JAMES C. SHAW, of Hannibal, in thev county of Marion and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed-Water-Pipe Heaters for Steam-Boilers; and I do hereby declarethe following to be a fu-ll, clear, and ekact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled vin the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawingsL which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved feed Water pipe heater for steam boilers; and the object of the same is to provide an improved device whereby steam and hot water may be conducted from the boiler tothe outer end of the feed pipe heater and from thence inward through said pipe to the supply tank.
Heretofore it has been common to connect the inner end of the feed pipe with the boiler so that .steam could be passed therethrough to the 'outer pipe end where it discharged through a pet cock, but such an arrangement is objectionable in that the steam and hot water used to prevent freezing is wasted. I overcome this objection by passing the heating current backward through the pipe and discharge it into the tank, thereby accomplishing in a measure the two fold object of keeping warm the pipe and utilizing the steam or water passed therethrough for warming the feed water.
With these objects in View, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, and arrangement of parts fully described hereinafter, and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved device shown partially in section. Fig. 2 illustrates the same in position on a boiler, and shows a slight modification of the steam connection. Y
A is the boiler connection having valve seat B upon which is seated valve C and to which is connected the outer end of the feed water pipe D leading from the tank or other supply not shown. Valve C is bridged by.y pipe E leading vfrom boiler connection A to pipe D as shown, and having therein the cock F. Thus it will be seen that when freezing is to be guarded against said cock will be opened, allowing steam to pass therethrough into the feed pipe in which, latter it courses back through the whole length of the same and discharges into the tank or other supply.
An intermediate check valve G is sometimes encountered in feed pipes and in such case the said valve is tubed as shown at H which permits a free passage of the heating fluid while at the same time .the operation of an injector will not be interrupted.
In the arrangement illustrated in Fig. 2 they outer end of bridge pipe E is connected to pipe I leading from the steam chest or other point on the boiler to the feed pipe, and by this arrangement steam may be passed through said pipe direct, or through the bridge pipe as may be desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of a steam boiler, a
jboiler connection having a valve seat, a check valve therein, a feed water-pipe connected to said boiler connection, and a valved pipe bridging said check valve, substantially as A'shown and described.
2. The combination ofa steam boiler, a boiler connection, a check valve therein, a feed water pipe leading to said boiler connection, pipe I leading from the boiler to the said feed pipe, and a valved bridge pipe extending from the boiler connection to the said pipe I, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination of a steam boiler, a feed water pipe leading thereto, a check valve in the outer end of said pipe, a valved pipe bridging said check valve, and an intermediate check valve in the feed pipe provided with a passage for the purpose, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES C. SHAW.
