IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-ENGINE WATER-HEATERS.-
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To ali/whom 'it ma/y concern.-
Beit known that we, WILLIAM ASHLEY JONES, of 'the city of Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque, and State of Iowa, and JAMES L. SHERMAN, of Cassville, inGrant county, State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and improved Device for Application to Apparatus for Supplying Hot Water to Steam-Boilers, as
herein substantiallyV set forth; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specilcation, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view of the heater.

This invention relates to a new and useful improvement on the worm-sections within heaters, which are designed for using the exhaust of steam-engines-for the purpose of heating water preparatory to its introduction into the steam-boilers.
The nature of our invention consists in a certain arrangement of relief-valves (sometimes called vacuumvalves) in feed-pipes, whereby the pipes are relieved when certain shocks from back action .or other cause are experienced.
The valves (one or more) are to be attached to each I'section ofthe worm or coil through .which water is to be conveyed-t0 the pump or pumps to the boiler by way of the worm-sections or coil.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand our invention, we will describe its construction and operation.
Inthe accompanying drawings, Arepresents a steamheater, through which `the exhaust-steam from the engine is conducted.
The pipe B communicates with the exhaust-port of an engine, and allows steam toy pass into the heating-drum A, through which it circulates, and escapes through the exit-pipe C.
Within the drum A is a number of coils or sections of worm or pipe, through which (connected by half or full-return elbows) water passes., from lake, river, or other means of supply, to the boiler.
The water enters the coil or worm at D, and, in passing through the sections Dsurrounded by the .hot steaiu, becomes heated more or less, before being .other suitable manner, thereby securing the proper action of the pumps, and guarding against diiiiculties incident to the usual practice on lake, river, and other vessels, and engines and boilers generally. v
By the application of this invention, any desired or reasonable number of feet of worm may be used in a heating-drum.
The water enters at D and escapes at D2.

What we claim as our invention, and d'esire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A valve or valves, E, applied to the several sections, D, of a worm or coil, or pipe, which is arranged within a heater, A, substantially in the manner and for the purposes herein described.
