Description
1. WALKER.
Plow.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES WALKER, OF BELLEFONTAINE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 5,168, dated June 19, 1847.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JAMES WALKER, of Bellefontaine, in the county of Logan, in the State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Plows 5 and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the principle or character which distinguishes it from all other things before known, and ofthenuanner ofmaking, construct ing, and using the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a view of the landside of the plow, and Fig. 2 a view of the sole. I
The same letters indicate like parts in all the figures.
The nature of my invention consists in the method of widening the plow by moving the heel of the mold-board out and bracing it by a bolt through the plateshare, so that when the share is new laid it can be carried out and as it wears away it can be gradually con-. tracted, thus presenting the best possible combination of parts during the whole wear of the plow, and also affording greater facility for taking a wider or narrower furrow.
The construction is as follows:
The landside and sheth are made of castiron of the usual form, but somewhat short for the length of the mold-board, which is unusually long and shaped like the well-known Scotch plow.
The share is a wrought-iron plate-share ot the usual form. Near the cutter-side of the share, at the heel thereof, there is a long hole made at right angles to the landside, as shown at a, Fig. 2. A bolt passes through this from the mold-board at that point, the head of which is countersunk into the mold-board in the usual way, and it is fastened. underneath by a nut and screw. This allows the heel of the moldboard to be moved out and in at will the length of the hole a.
The mold-board overlaps the landside, as
shown at b, Fig. 1, and a bolt passes through This bolt has a nut it and the landside at 0.. and screw on it which can be slacked up to allow the motion above named. The change forward is so little to move the heel the proper distance that the line of direction is not materially changed, and a substantial and durable implement is thus made, which works as well from the'time it is laid new till it is worn out.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the mold-board with the landside and plate-share, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth, so that the plow can be made wider or narrower at pleasure.
JAMES WALKER.
