No. 516.7215 Patented MarfZOi 1894.4'

' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. HEATHERINGTON, OF SHEL'I'ON, NEBRASKA.
GRAIN-SHOVELING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 516,721, dated March 20, 1894.
Application filed May 10,1893.
To a/ZZ whom, t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JOHN H. HEATHEEING- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at all parts of a car or vessel as it is receivedv from an elevator spout or other source of supply; and it has for its general object to provide such a device of a simple, compact and efficient construction and one which may be readily secured and conveniently operated in the interior of a car or the hold of a vessel.
Another object of the invention is to pro- Vide a distributing-or trimming device embodying such a construction that the direction of movement of the shovel may be changed and the throw of the same regulated when desired.
Other objects and advantages will be fully understood from the following description and claims when taken in connection with the annexed drawing, in which the figure is a perspective View illustrating my improved device in an operative position within a car.
In the said drawing, the letter A, indicates a railway car having a door opening as p, and a low door or guard as q; and ,indicates the body bar'of my improved device. This bar o', may be formed from wood, and it is provided at its outer end with a xedly connected clamp plate j, which is designed to restupon one side of the door or guard q, and serve in conjunction with a movable plate j', to connect the bar to said door. The plates j, j', have their ends bent upwardly as shown and they are provided in these bent portions with threaded apertures for the reception of the screws la, through the medium of which they are clamped upon the door.
B, indicates a metal bar which is fixedly connected to the bar c', adjacent to the outer end thereof and is disposed at right angles to said bar as shown. This bar B, has its ends bent upwardly as indicated by c, c', andit sena No. 473,741. N0 model.)
terminates 'in the lateral arms r, r', which preferably have their ends reduced as shown for a purpose presently set forth. The bar B, is connected with the clamp plate j, by the brace bars Z, and it is provided with the legs m, which are preferably detachable in order that the device may be packed in a small space when desired.
C, indicates braces which are preferably connected to the bar B,in a detachable manner and are designed to engage the upper corners of the door opening p, so as to securely hold thev device in position. These braces O, are made in two sections e, e', and these sections have their contiguous ends threaded for the engagement of an interiorly threaded union f, whereby it will be seen that the braces may be lengthened and shortened when desired to suit them to various conditions.
In addition to the securing and bracing' devices described,'I prefer to provide my improved device with a brace as D, which is hinged or otherwise flexibly connected to the bar o', and is designed to engage the roof of the car or the deck of a vessel. This brace D, like the braces C, comprises two sections g, g', which are threaded and connected by a union f, whereby the brace 'may be length-l ened and shortened when desired.
b, indicates a rotary shaft which is journaled in suitable bearings h, h', and which may be rotated by any approved motor connected-in any suitable manner. This shaft b, is provided at its inner end with afcrank b', which takes loosely through the box 0, upon the handle or', of the shovel or, and is secured by a cotter pin or in any other approved manner.
The shovel c, is preferably7 of the proportional size illustrated and its handle a', is provided adjacent to its free end with a block n, for the engagement of one end of the link d, which is providedl at its opposite end with a sleeve or collar z, designed to receive the arms r', r', of the bar B, as shown. construction it will be seen that when the shaft b, is rotated in the direction indicated by the arrow the shovel c, will be caused to oscillate and move the grain or other material in the direction of the arrow y.
By this In order that the throw of the shovel c, may be increased or diminished when desired, I contemplate providing the block fn, with a series of apertures as n', arranged a suitable distance apart. By reason of this provision, it will be seen that the link d, may be fixed at various distances from the box o, for the purpose stated.
IVhen it is desired to move the grain in a direction opposite to that indicated by the arrow fy, it is simply necessary to reverse the shovel on the crank b', and mount the sleeve or collar e, of the link d, upon the arm r', of the bar B.
It will be noticed from the foregoing description and the drawing that my improved distributing or trimming device is very simple in construction and effective in operation, and it will also be noticed that the device may be mounted and operated with equal facility in a car or in the hold of a vessel or other place.
I have endeavored in the foregoing specification to impart a full and clear understanding of my improved device by specilically describing the construction and relative arrangement of the several parts, but I do not desire to be understood as confining myself to such specific construction and arrangement, as such changes may be made in practice as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
I-Iaving described my invention, what I claim is I. In a device for trimming or distributing grain, the combination of a rotary crank shaft, a shovel mounted on the crank of said shaft and having ahandle, a bearing as n, mounted on the handle of the shovel and having a series of apertures arranged at intervals apart and a link adapted to engage the apertures of the bearing n, at one end and connected at its opposite end to a stationary support, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a device for trimming or distributing grain and the like, the combination with a suitable support and bearings as r, lr', disposed on opposite sides of the support; of a crank shaft journaled on the support, a shovel mounted on the crank of said shaft and having a handle and alink connected at one end t-o the handle and adapted to be connected to either of said bearings r, fr', substantially as specified.
3. A device for trimming or distributing grain comprising a body bar, a clamp plate connected to the body bar and having threaded apertures, a second clamp plate having threaded apertures, screws taking through the threaded apertures of the clamp plates, and connecting the same, a bar as B, connected to the body bar and disposed at right angles thereto, legs as m, connected to the bar B, braces C, connected to the bar B, and consisting of two threaded sections and a union connecting the same, a brace as D, hinged or flexibly connected to the body bar and consisting of two sections and a union connecting the same, a rotary crank shaft mounted on the body bar, a shovel mounted on the crank of said shaft, and havinga handle, and a link connected to the handle of the shovel and to a stationary support substantially as specified.
4c. In a device for trimming ordistributing grain, the combination with a body, and a bar as B, disposed at right angles to the body and having lateral arms disposed on opposite sides of the body; of a crank shaft journaled on the body, a shovel mounted on the crank of said shaft and havingahandlc, and a link connected to the handle of the shovel and having a sleeve or collar to receive the arms of the bar B, substantially as specified.
5. In a device for trimming or distributing grain, the combination with the body bar, the bar B, connected to the body bar and disposed at right angles thereto and having the lateral arms r, r', arranged in a plane above the body bar and on opposite sides thereof, and a rotary crank shaft journaled. on the body bar; of a shovel mounted on the crank of the Y crank shaft and having a handle, and a link connected at one end to the handle and having a sleeve or collar at its opposite end to receive the arms of the bar B, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereofI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
