SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,232, dated May 10, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT B. MITCHELL, a resident of the city of New Orleans, parish of Orleans, and State of Louisiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Crozing-Maehines and I do herebydeclare the following to bea full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification.
This invention is especially intended for use in the manufacture of cisterns, tanks, barrels, buckets, 850., inasmuch as it enables an operator to accomplish a greater amount of work within a given time and in a much better and more satisfactorymanner than if done by hand, as heretofore. In addition to its being used as a crozing-machine, it can be readily arranged to square or trim off the ends of the staves.
The construction and operation of this machine will be readily understood by referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view thereof, and Fig. 2 a vertical cross-section through the line m 00. v

This frameis furnished with journal-boxes c c, in which is operated a shaft, d, that is provided at one end with apnlley,f, and at the other(inner end) withacutter-head or crozing-tool, g, of any desired construction.
Between the side pieces of the frame is a cross-tie, h, on the upper surface of which is fitted a sliding gage, i, whereby the distance between the crozing and end of stave is regu lated'.
Pivoted to the inner side of the above-mentioned frame is an arm, is, the rear end of which is bent downward and slotted, so as to receive a screw, 1, whereby it issecurely held in any desired position. The inner end of this arm projects over the cutter-head, and this end is provided with a friction-roller, as shown at m. cured at right angles to the inner piece of the first frame, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. On a central line the lower portions of the legs 0 o are provided with vertical slots, in which are fitted WI isfs 1' r. These are held at any desired height bythe tightening of nuts thatare fitted to threaded portions of the same. To these wrists are fitted the lower ends of vibrating arms S S,thc upper portionsot' which areeonnected with and serve as supports for thestaverest if.
In order that the stave to be operated upon may be kept in contact with the friction-rollers m, that Wrist which is nearest the cutterhead is connected by a link, a, with the inner end of a beam,o, the latter pivoted to the supporting-leg 0, and having the upper surface of its outer end notched, as shown, to receive a weight, '10, which is so adjusted as tolittle more than counterbalance the weight of the stave and stave-rest, thus holding the work close against the roller m withoutproducing any unnecessary friction.
I claim as my invention 1. In combination with a crozing-tool, the
stave-rest 2, link u,beam o, and weight for feeding the material to the crozing-tool and counterbalaneing the weight of the material, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with a crozing-tool, the gage 'i, stave-rest t, and friction-roller an, all operating in the manner substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In combination with a crozingtool, the arm is, pivoted at or near its rear end and provided with a slot for adjustment, and having at its upper or forward end a roller arranged over the crozing-tool, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
