ORNAMENTAL STOVE.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Lett-ers Patent No. 516,617, dated March 13, 1894.

Beit known that I, JAFEW S. VAN BUREN, of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York,have invented certain new and `useful Improvements in Ornamental Stoves;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inventlon, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it,
reference being had to the accompanying 1drawings, which form part of this specifica- My invention relates to improvements in ornamental stoves, and it consists in the partlcular construction and arrangement of parts which will be fully described hereinafter and especlally pointed out in the claims.
The primary object of my invention is to produce a stove having an inner casing forming an ash pit, fire-pot and combustion chamber, and an outer ornamental fret work caslng formed of several separate plates which are constructed to be supported by the bottom of the ash pitindependently of the inner cas1ng to permit them being set up and removed without interfering therewith, and the bottom of the ash pit constructed to allow free ingress of air between the lower ends of said casings.
A further objcctof my invention relates to certain details of construction which will be fully described in this specification. Fig. 3, is a detached plan vlew of the bottom of the ash pit.
A indicates the bottom of the ash pit which forms the base or support for the inner and outer casing independently. in the form of a pan having an outwardly projecting horizontal flange B, surrounding the sides and back of its upper edge, the outer edge of the said iiange being curved downward as shown at b, to rest upon the upper edge of the ornamental base C having feet D. As shown in Fig. 1, this base C is deeper than the ash pan or bottom A, whereby the latter is supported clear of the Iioor, and the bottom or pan Ais rectangular in plan, as shown in Fig. 3.

i The horizontal or flat portionof ash pan flangeA Bis provided with perforations or openings E, preferably oblong in contour, while the front end of the flange not having any flat portion is imperforate. From this it will be seen that the base O is outside of the openings E. The ash pit G is oblong in plan and rests upon the ash pan having an inwardly projecting fiange c, which is narrow at the rear side thereof, and Wide at its front side, as shown in Fig. l, and for a purpose which will appear farther on. This pit has the lower edge of its rear wall resting upon the ash pan inside of the flange B and the openings therein, while the front end over-reaches the corresponding point of the front end of the pan, and rests thereon at about the point where the flange B begins to curve downward.
Placed upon the flange c, at the upper edge 7o of the ash pit is a circular Iire pot H, and supported upon the upper end of this tirepot is a casin g I forming a combustion chamber. The top or dome J of this combustion chamber has at its rear side an upwardly extending tubular portion K for the reception of a stove pipo, the rear side of which projects slightly beyond the side of said chamber and is provided witha register or damper L, constructed t0 be operated from outside the outer casing. It will be seen that thus far I have described an operative stove without the addition of any other part-s. I will now describe the outer ornamental casing. The outer casing consists of front, side and rear plates M, of fret work to permit a free passage therethrough of vthe heated air generated by the inner heating casing, the lower end of the side and rear walls 0r plates of said outer casing resting upon the flange B of the ash pan outside of the openings E, therein, and extending upward outside of the inner casing and separated therefrom a suitable distance to form an air space, while the front wall thereof has its lower edge resting upon the front upper edge of the ash pit G, outside of and separated from the fire pot to form au air space. Attention is directed to the imperforate lower portions d, of the side and rear walls of the ornamental casing opposite the ash pit, whereby cool air is taken from below the stove through the openings E, and between the por- IOO tion d, of the casing and ash pit, and delivered to the lire pot where it is heated and then radiates outward through thefret worked portion e, of the casing into the room. An
opening N is made in the front Wall of the outer casing for the projecting door frame f, shown in Fig. 2. A fret work top or dome P is placed over the upper end of the outer casing but separate therefrom, and has an opening Q through which the tubular portion K extends, and projecting inward from this dome P, under the check damper L, is a horizontal flange R. Formed in the top of the dome P is a central opening S, over which is placed a swinging dome-shaped fret work cover T. From the above description it will be seen that I have constructed a complete inner stove, and placed around this an outer casing which is entirely separate and independent therefrom and that the check damper and all other unsightly parts thereof are entirely inclosed by the ornamental casing, while at the same time free ingress of fresh air, and a free egress of heated air is afforded.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A stove com prisin g a base, an ash-pit having an external ange near its bottom which rests upon said base, the fiange having openings in its sides and back at points inside of the said base, a fire pot and a combustion chamber supported upon the ash-pit, and an Outer fret Work casing surrounding but separate from the ash-pit iirepot and combustion chamber and supported upon the base outside of the openings in the ash-pit flange, substantially as shown and described.
2. A stove comprising a base, an ash-pit having a surrounding flange resting upon the base and provided with openings in its sides and back, a tire pot and a combustion chamber supported upon the ashpit, combined with an outer ornamental casing having its rear and side Walls resting upon said flange outside of the openings therein, and the front wall stopping substantially at the top of said ash-pit, the said outer casing having an imperforate portion opposite the ash-pit, and provided with perforations opposite the repot and combustion chamber, whereby air is drawn from the floor past the ash-pit around the fire-pot and combustion chamber and escapes through the outer casing into the room, substantially as described.
3. In an ornamental stove, the combination with a base, an ash-pit having an external horizontal flange resting upon said base and provided with openings in its side and back at points inside of the base, and a tire-pot and combustion chamber, of an outer ornamental casing consisting of separate detachable side and rear fret work plates supported outside of the said openings and independent of the inner casing, substantially as described.
