IMPROVEMENT IN HEATlNG-STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,031, dated March 21, 1876; application filed February 23, 1876.
i To all whom it may concern:
2, a vertical section through line a: w of Fig. 1.
This invention relates to certain improvements upon the heating-stove for which Letters Patent No. 167 ,497 were granted me September 7, 1875; and it consists in the particular construction and arrangement of the parts in which the smoke-pipe 'is connected with the back part of the fire-chamber instead of the top, and the upper tapered portion of the heating-chamber is expanded into a drum surmounted by a water-vessel at the point of exit for the hot air through the detachable cover. An extra back plate of brick or metal forms the back of the fire-pot, and a perforated partition of the same material rests thereupon and divides the heating-chamber from the fire-pot.
' 1n the drawing, A represents an open grate; B, the interior casing, forming the fire-pot back and the heating-drum D, the outer casing; H, the detachable cover; I, partitions; F, an inlet to the heating-chamber from the room; and G an inlet to the same from the outer air, all substantially as described in my said previous patent. Instead, however, of extending the smoke-pipe J vertically through the top of cover H, I make a lateral connection for the same through the side of the outer casing D, opening into the chamber K. I also place in the rear of the fire-pot a back, M, made of either brick or metal, to increase the durability of the fire-pot, and I then insert a partition, L, of the same material as M, which divides the fire-pot from the heating-drum, except through the perforation a, through which the smoke passes into the lower part of the drum, and from thence laterally into the smoke-pipe. The upper portion of the chamber K, instead of being extended in-- to a vertical smoke-pipe, is expanded into a heating-drum, O, of thin sheet-iron, and upon the top of the same is constructed a watervessel,b. This water-vessel is at the point of escape of hot air from the heating-chamber, and just beneath the openings 0 in the detachable eover, so that as the heated air is deflected, just before it escapes into the room, it is made to impinge against the surface of the water, and become thereby purified and laden from affecting the fire-pot.
Instead of constructing the back M and partition L in two pieces, as before described, I may make both in one piece, and curve the back forward, as is indicated in dotted lines, so as to leave the opening a as far front as possible, so as to throw out more heat.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. The combination of the outer casing 1), having inlets F and G, the inner casing B, the perforated partition L, the laterally-connectin g smoke-pipe J, detachable cover H, having openings 0, and the heating-drum 0, having a superposed water-receptacle, as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with the outer casing D and the detachable cover H, having openings c, of the closed heating-drum (1, having a superposed water-receptacle, b, arranged below the outlets, to receive the impact of the heated air before it escapes into the room, as and for the purpose described.
