S. S. BURR. SUPPORT on STANDARD FOR FRAMES OF BATH TUBSLTA'BLES, 8:0.
No. 516,562. PatentedMar. 13, 1894.
UNITED STATES PATENT @rnron.
SANFORD S. BURR, OF SOUTH HAVEN, MICHIGAN.
SUPPORT 0R STANDARD FOR FRAMES 0F BATH-TUBS, TAB LES, &c.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 516,562, dated March 13, 1894.
Application filed July 24:, 1893. Serial No. 481,376. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SANFORD S. BURR, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Haven, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supports or Standards for the Frames of Bath -Tubs, Tables, &c., of which I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification.
My present invention has for its object to provide an improved support for the frames of articles, such as portable bath tubs, tables, and the like, and more particularly is my invention designed to provide an improvedconstruction of standard or support, which can be readily attached to, or detached from, the frame, and which, when in use, will aiford an exceedingly strong joint with the frameor body of the article to be upheld. In the construction of frames for portable bath tubs, knock-down tables and like articles of furniture, it is important that not only the standards or legs of the frame should be attached thereto in such manner that they can be conveniently collapsed, folded or removed, but it is of the greatest importance that such standards or legs shall, when in use, afford such a secure joint with the frame of the article, that all looseness or danger of breakage shall be avoided. By my present invention I have provided a standard or support which can not only instantly be detached from the frame to be sustained, but which, when connected to the frame in position for use, forms a perfectly secure and rigid joint therewith.
My invention will be found capable of use in avariety of situations, but for convenience I have shown it as applied in connection with a frame designed for a portable bath tub.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a frame having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing one pair of supports or legs moved toward the center of the frame, and showing also a supplementary cross bar at such point. Fig. 3 is a plan view of one corner of the frame showing the support in place. Fig. 4 is a detail plan View of one of the supports applied in connection with the removable cross bar.
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the upper end of one of the supports.
The frame to be supported is shown as composed of the two end bars, A, and the side bars B, these bars being connected together at their corners by nails or screws and by stay blocks, 0, if desired.
D designates my improved corner support or standard, the end of which is formed with the open ended slots at and d, adapted to receive the bars A and B. The slots cl and d are formed by the tongues d and d and are shown as arranged at right angles with each other, in keeping with the arrangement of the bars A and B, which these slots are to re ceive. When the corners of the frame are set within the slots of the supports or standards, as shown, it is manifest that the frame will be securely upheld, since the bars of the frame can be moved only from the tops of the slots, and the tongues 01 and d of the supports bear so snugly upon the opposite sides of the bars A, B, that all danger of rocking or wabbling the frame is avoided.
With frames of certain articles, such for example, as portable bath tubs, it is often desirable to shift the position of one set of supports or standards, or with table frames, to provide an additional set of such supports, and for this purpose my improved support or standard will be found especially advantageous. Thus, for example, in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the frame there shown is provided with a removable cross bar E, set between the side bars A and B and into the slots dof the set of standards or supports D, which in Fig. 1 are shown as at the left hand end of the frame. Hence, if the bath tub frame is to be used for bathing a child, the cross bar E will be set in place, as shown in Fig. 2, and the rubber sheet constituting the water receptacle will be between the cross barE and the end bar B, thus avoiding the necessity of using so great a supply of water as would be required if the rubber sheet were hung between both end bars of the frame.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
- 1. A support or standard D having at one end side tongues d and central tongue (1 1o vided with the tongues 61 and d forming the open slots d and 01' extending through the standards D at an oblique angle to the vertical sides thereof, and a shifting bar E arranged to be engaged by said supports, or standards, substantially as described.
