UNITED STATES ROBERT PATENT OFFICE.
MAOMORRIS', OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 516,354, dated March 13, 1894.
Application filed March 6,1893- Serial No. 464,728. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, ROBERT MACMORRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Mustache Shields or Guards for Cups, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a detachable shield or guard for application to cups for protecting the mustache in the imbibing of fluids or liquids therefrom.
The principal objects of my invention are r 5 first, to provide asimple, inexpensive and efficient detachable guard or shield for ready application to diflerent styles of cups for protecting the mustache in the imbibing of a liquid or fluid therethrough; and second, to
provide a detachable guard or shield for cups for protecting the mustache and permitting of a regulated discharge of the fluid or liquid from the cup into the mouth without the same contacting with the mustache.
2 Myinvention consists of the improvements in detachable shields orguards for cups hereinafter described and claimed.
The nature and general features of my invention will be more fully understood from 0 the followingdescription taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, and in which- Figure 1, is aperspective view of acup with a detachable shield or guard embodying the general features of myinvention shown in application thereto. Fig. 2, is a similar view of a detachable device removed from the cup; and Fig. 3, is a vertical central section through the device of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings a, is a cup of any suitable shape or form provided with an ordinary handle a.
b, is the detachable shield or guard having a truncated or similar shaped body 0, and
having the front portion of the body convexly curved at d and d, and at the middle of the front portion of the body 0, as at d the same is arranged so as to flt snugly up against the inner surface of the cup 0., for purposes to be presently fully explained.
e, is an inlet located near the bottom of the device in the front portion thereof and so arranged as that in the application of the shield or guard to the cup a, the face of the inlet 9, will occupya position flush with the internal wall of the cup and in such positiona narrow space 6', will be provided at the base portion of the device between the internal surface of the cup and the internal surface e ,-of the shield or guard through which space the fluid of the cup is lifted by suction through the body 0, of the device to be presently more fully explained. This outlet e, merges with a curved conduit f, provided with a flaring teat or spout g, for discharging in regulated quantity the fluid contents of the cup a, into the mouth. The conduit f, by reason of the curved construction thereof as clearly shown in Fig. 3, is in fact an air channel, which when the device is in use with the cup containing 0 its full quota of fluid permits of the requisite normal suction being obtained and maintained to cause an efficientlifting of the fluid through the narrow slit or opening e, in the base of the device. Moreover, the flow of the fluid is at all times while the shield orguard is in use under due regulation, so that at no time can the mouth be flooded through the lifting by suction of the contents of the cup, which would occur if astrainer was employed 8c in the base portion of the device, because of the area of open space which such would present and therebyinterfering with the lifting bysuction and at the same time requiring abnormal suction and as a consequence flooding of the mouth with the fluid of the cup at. The upper or face portion 0, of the body 0, is provided with an overhanging flange h, forming a channeled seat for engaging the device with the edge or rim of the cup 11, and provided 0 with an integral depending lip or tongue 2', for engaging the exterior surface of the cup and supporting the device in position in connection therewith.
The hereinabove described detachable de- 5 vice having been caused to assume the position in connection with the cup as illustrated in Fig. 1, with the first and second fingers resting on the face 0', of the body 0, and with the thumb and other fingers embracing the I00 cup, the contents of the cup in regulated quantity may be readily withdrawn thereinto the month, without the mustache being soiled or in fact coming in contact with the fluid or liquid of the cup withdrawn therefrom.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The detachable mustache shield or guard for drinking cups or vessels, comprising an imperforate truncated body 0, having a convexly curved front at d and d, with the middle portion (1 adapted to snugly engage the wall of a drinking vessel, an inlet 6 located near the bottom of the device and adapted to occupy a position flush with the internal wall of the vessel so as to leave a narrow space 6', at the base and between the internal wall of the cup or vessel and surface of the device and through WhlGh narrow space 6', the liquid is adapted to be lifted by suction in regulated volume or prescribed quantity through the curved conduit f, extending the length of the device and having at the extremity thereof a flaring teat g, the upper portion 0', of said body a, of the device being provided with an overhanging flange h, which is recessed so as to be adapted to seat with the top edge of the vessel and provided with a depending lip i, adapted to maintain the device in required position with respect to the vessel, all arranged as shown and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBT. MACMORRIS.
