FRAME FOR DUPLICATING APPARATUS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 516,139, dated March 6,1894.

Be it known that I, ELIAS S. WALKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duluth, 1n the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Frames for Duplicating Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a duplicating'apparatus frame and means for operating the stencil plates of such machines, and it consists of a novel foot treadle operating mechanism for ralsing the stencil frame or plate, the said frame automatically returning to its normally lowered condition, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a table with a mimeograph and other duplicating apparatus upon the same and my foot treadle stencil frame operating mechanism applied to the same. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through a portion of the top of the table and the duplicatlng apparatus and stencil frame operating mechanism, and Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the pulley post, a cleat applied to the under side of the duplicating apparatus and pulley, the duplicating frame being shown in section.

A in the drawings represents the base of a duplicating apparatus and B the stencil frame or plate which is hinged at its rear end to the said base.

0 represents a pulley post which is provided with a slot near its upperend in which is journaled a sheave or pulley D, while the lower end of the post is bent at right angles tothe upright portion thereof to form a foot E. A hook or catch F is also pivoted near the upper end of the post in close proximity to the pulley.

G represents a U-shaped bail which is provided centrally of its length with an eye or hook g and is attached by its ends to the side of the stencil frame, as shown.

H is a cable of wire or rope which is attached to the hook or eye 9 of the bail and passed over the pulley D and down the back of the pulley post through a small hole in the table and connected by its lower end to a foot treadle I. The foot treadle is located under the table within convenient reach of the foot of an operator seated at said table.

J is a cleat which is screwed or otherwise secured to the under side of the duplicating frame A, and is provided wit-h a passage j for the reception of the foot E of the pulley post. By this construction, the pulley post can be readily placed in position upon the duplicating frame and held in such position without the use of any other fastening means. By providing the stencil frame with the U -shaped bail and attaching the cable to said bail instead of directly to the frame, the upward movement of said frame will be limited, and the bail will be of such length as to prevent the frame being lifted to a perpendicular or past a perpendicular position, so that it will always automatically return, by its gravity, to its normally closed position.

The operation of the device is as follows: The stencil frame is raised by pressing firmly and steadily with the foot on the treadle; a piece of paper to be printedis placed in position upon the base plate; the pressure on the treadle is slackened and the stencil frame automatically drops to a closed position; an inked roller is then passed over the stencil in the usual manner and by again pressing on the treadle the stencil frame is lifted, the printed sheet removed and the operation repeated, as described until the desired amount of work is accomplished. By this construction and arrangement, the work can be much more rapidly done, with less labor and the work appear much neater and cleaner. By having a U-shaped hail the operation of the roller is not interfered with, as it can be read ily and conveniently passed under the same. When it is desired to hold the stencil plate or frame in a raised condition for any purpose, it is simply necessary to lower the hook F over the bail.

The invention is very simple and cheap and very efficient in its operation, the stencil frame being manipulated entirely independently of the hand.

What I claim as my invention is 1. The combination with a duplicating apparatus employing a base plate and a hinged stencil frame, of a vertical post carrying a pulley, and provided with a hook a foot treadle for raising the stencil frame and a cable passed over the pulleyin the post and connected to the stencil frame and to the foot treadle, the stencil frame after being raised by the treadle being adapted to automatically return to a lowered, closed condition, substantially as described.

2. In aduplicating apparatus, the combination of a base plate, a stencil frame hinged thereto, a vertical post carrying a pulley, a bail connected to the stencil frame, a foot treadle for raising the stencil frame, and a cable passed over the pulley of the post and connected to the bail and treadle, the stencil frame after being raised by the treadle being adapted to be automatically returned to a lowered, closed condition, substantially as described.

3. In a duplicating apparatus, the combination of a base plate, a stencil frame hinged thereto a vertical post carryinga pulley near its upper end, a U shaped bail connected to stencil frame which permits of the uninter-- ELIAS S. WALKER.
