S ,OBRIEN HANGER FOR STEAM PIPES.
,922. Patented Mar. 6, 1894.
MIA/55%gawb UNITED STATES PATENT Erica STEPHEN OBRIEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HANGER FOR STEAM-PIPES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters ,5 Application filed June 20, 1898.
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
l 3e it known that I, STEPHEN OBBIEN, a c tlzen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hangers for Steam-Pipes, the, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improved hanger for steam and other pipes, by which not only a reliable support forthesteam-pipe 15 provided, but also provision made for the expansion and contraction of the same.
The nvention consists of a hanger for steam-pipes composed of two semi-circular sections which are jointed at the lower end by a transverse pivot which is passed through perforated ears of one section and engaged by the intermediate ear of the other section, which car is provided with an elongated slot so that the ear is locked to or released from the lower end of the recessed section. The upper ends of the hanger-sections are supported by tapering recesses on the upwardlyflaring and rounded off lugs of a suspensorpiece, that is attached to the lower end of the suspension-tube or rod, as will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side-elevation of my improved hanger for steam-pipes. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, taken on aplane passing through the center of the entire hanger. Fig. 3 is a plan view of Fig.1, and Fig. dis a vertical transverse section taken on lines 4:, 4, Fig. 2. V
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A and A represent the semi-sections of my improved hanger for steam and other pipes. Each section is made of nearly semi-circular shape, the section Abeing provided at itslower end with a central recess and with two perforated ears actfor the transverse pivot B, as shown clearly in crosssection in Fig. 2. The second section A is hinged to the bolt B by means of an ear of which enters into the recess between the ears of the section A, the ear Ct being provided with an elongated opening a? through which the pivot Bis passed. The upper ends of the sections A, A, are made in the form of semi-circular sockets b b, which are provided at theirinner lower corners with rounded off and upwardly flaring recesses dd, that engage the upwardly flaring and rounded off lugs e e, of the suspension-piece E, which is made approximately of inverted T-shape and provided with a threaded shank 6 to which the suspension-rod or tube E for the hanger is screwed.
The hanger A A is readily applied to the steam pipe and the suspension-piece E by raising the semi-section A on the pivot B into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, in which position the section A can readily swing on the pivot B into lateral position, whereby the insertion of the suspension-piece into the socket-recesses d d is rendered possible. For locking the section A it is returned in downward direction until the pivot B arrives at the upper end of the elongated slot a and the straight side of the ear 6' abuts against the straight side of the recess between the ears a a, as shown in Fig 2, whereby the hanger is firmly locked in position. The recessed semi-sockets l1 h at the upper ends of the sections A A, engage thereby the flaring lugs of the suspension-piece E, and form thereby a rigid support for the steam or other pipe to be supported by the hanger.
As the hanger A A can readily swing on the rounded off lugs e e in the oblong recess 6 formed by the recessed faces of the semisockets b b of the sections A A, the hanger can adapt itself readily to the expansion or contraction of the steam-pipe without interfering therewith. I
The hanger can be suspended at any distance from the ceiling by using a longer or shorter suspension-rod E. The hanger can be readily applied to or removed from the steam-pipe by the locking or unlocking of the laterally-movable portion A on the transverse pivot B, while all the parts can be made in cast-metal with little extra work on the same, so that the hanger can be supplied at comparatively small expense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A hanger for steam-pipes, composed of two semi-circular sections that are connected 3. The combination of a hanger, formed of at the lower end by a transverse pivot, and two semi-circular hanger sections connected 20 a suspension-piece having upwardly flaring by a transverse pivot at their lower ends and and rounded oiflugs, to which the upper ends provided at their upper ends with semi-sock 5 of the hanger-sections are fitted,so as to perets having flaring recesses at the inner cormit the oscillating of the hanger, substanners, a suspension-piece having upwardlytially as set forth. flaring and rounded off lugs, fitted into the 25 2. A hanger for steam-pipes, consisting of recesses of the semi-sockets, and asuspension a semi-section A having-perforated cars a a, rod'connected with the shank of said suspen- I0 a second semi-section A having an car a at sion-piece, substantially as set forth.
the lower endwith an elongated slot and a In testimony that I claim the foregoing as straight side, a transverse pivot B passing my invention I have signed my name in pres- 30 through the ears of one section and the slotence of two subscribing witnesses. ted ear of the othersection, and a suspension- 15 pieceE having flaring and rounded off lugs I STEPHEN BRIEN' e e which engage corresponding recesses at Witnesses: the upper ends of the hanger-sections, sub- PAUL GOEPEL,
stantially as set forth. CHARLES SoHRoEDER.
