This invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in, spring beds, the object being to provide a bed bottom having means for its adjustment both as to width and height, and also to provide improved means thereon for protecting the mattress or bedding from contact with the springs, thereby avoiding the usual Wear and tear to which kthe mattress or bedding is usually subjected by the springs; and the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and pointed out inf the claim.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter Adesignates the frame, which consists of the lateral longitudinal bottom slats @,a., the shorter central slats b, the head board or slat B, and the foot board'or slat C, said head and foot boards or slats bein g supported transversely upon blocks D carried by the slats a, a. The central slats b are connected to the lateral slats a, a., by means of two pairs of link plates E, pivotcd at their respective ends to the outer slats and to the center slat and at their intermediate portions to the intermediate slats,this connection rendering the said center slats capable of an endwise pivotal movement.

G designates a covering for the springs, which is made of some suitable heavy cloth, having at each endfa transverse stiftening strip g, around which the cloth is looped and stitched. Said strips are provided with eyes or staples g', to each of which is connected one end of a short helical spring H, the other end of which is connected to the head or foot board. employed at each end, and serve to hold the cloth or covering in a state ot' tension over the springs. By reason of these springs, the cloth or covering is prevented from a sawing motion back and forth on the bed springs, whereby it is rendered much more durable than would otherwise be the case. The cloth or covering in addition to protecting the mat` tress or bedding from the bed springs, also serves to equalize the action of said springs.

By disconnecting the springs H, the covering may readily be removed to prevent its becoming soiled in transportation, or for the purpose of cleansing, or to permit access to all parts ot the bed bottom for cleaning purposes. When worn ont, or soiled, it may be readily removed without the aid of an expert.

The head and foot boards may be raised to the desired points by means of removable blocks I, which may be placed between vs'aid boards, and the support D. The blocks D which support the foot board may be made slightly lower than those supporting the head board.

To adj ust the bed to diiferent widths either for the purpose of adapting it to bedsteads of dierent widths or to canse it to take up less space in transportation or storage, the head and foot boards are removed and the slats are brought closer together, this being readily accomplished owing to the link connection between them,and the head and foot boards replaced, the securing screws being inserted in the additional holes la in said boards. V

Having described this invention, what I claim as new, and desire t0 secure by Letters Patent, is

The herein described bed bottom, comprising the lateral slats a, c, the intermediate slats b, b,of less length than said lateral slats, the two pairs of parallel links or plates E,

Two or more of these springs may be f IOO each of said links o1' plates beingpivotally connected at `one end to the center Slat, at its other end to one of the lateral slats, and having a, similar connection with each intermediate Slat, the blocks D supported upon the end portions of said lateral slats, the 'tramsverse head and foot-boards adjustably'-and removably secured to and supported upon said blocks D, the springs, and the yielding covering for said springs, substantially as to speced.
