To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM ORLANDO HAR- LAND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Menon, in the county of 1White and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mop Heads and Wringers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of l the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in mop heads for holding and wringing mops, and its object is to provide an improved construction of the same whereby I secure important advantages with respect to efficiency in operation.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter Eully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mop head constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig.2 is a central longitudinal section of the same.

In the said drawings the reference numeral l designates a bail or open frame, consisting of a metal bar having its ends bent at approximately right angles forming arms 2, in which are formed slots 3. In these slots work the ends of two shafts a and 5, provided with rollers 6 of wood or other material, covered with rubber, cloth or other material.

The numeral? designates a metal bar having its ends cut away at right angles forming arms 9, which are bent at approximately right angles and located in the slots 3, above and bearing against the shaft 4. At its center this bar is formed with an aperture through which loosely passes a pin or spindle l0. The upper part of this pin is screw threaded and passes through an aperture in the baill, and is formed with a ferrule or socket 12, to receive a handle. The ferrnle or socket is held in place by a nut 13. Carried by said pin 10 is a hand wheel 14, which is formed with corresponding screw threads. This wheel is rotatable and serves to regulate the tension of a coiled spring 15, surrounding said pin and confined between the bar 7 and the said wheel.

Upon one end of the shaft 5, is a crank 16, having pivoted to its outer or free end a tapering handle 17. The upper end of said crank is out away forming shoulders 18, with which the lugs 19 of said handle engage to limit the movement of the latter. When not in use this handle is turned inwardly and connected with a catch 20, consisting of a U- shaped metal plate secured to the bail 1. This U-shaped metal plate is made of spring metal so that when the tapering handle is forced therebetween it will be firmly and securely held in place.

The operation will be readily understood. The mop is inserted between the rollers 6 and the handle of thevcrank disengaged from its catch and turned outward until stopped by the shoulders .on the crank. The rollers are now rotated by means of said handle and crank and the mop confined between the rollers. It will also be seen that the rollers act as Wringers to wring out the mop.

While the mop is being carried between the rollers, the upper shaft 5, will give or yield by reason of the coiled spring, the tension of which can be regulated by the hand wheel, so as to bear with proper pressure on the said shaft.y

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- In a mop head and wringer, the combination with the bail having side arms provided with slots, the shafts and rollers journaled therein, thebar having its ends bent and working in said slots, the screw threaded pin and ferrule, the nut, the rotatable wheel, the coiled spring encircling said pin, the crank on one end of one of said shafts,tbe tapering handle pivoted thereto and the U -shaped spring metal catch secured to said bail whereby the handle is held in place by rictional contact when inserted between the upwardly extending arms of the catch; substantially as described.
