SMOKE-RING TOY.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 515,464, dated February 27, 1894.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH T. COM-Moss, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoke-Ring Toys, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to produce a device in the nature of a toy, which shall be adapted to receive a charge of smoke and permit it to be expelled therefrom in puffs, each assuming the form of a ring. This object I have attained by the novel features hereinafter set forth and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying. drawings, in which- I t Figure I represents a side view of a toy embodying my invention, as it appears when fully distended. Fig. II represents a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. III represents a side view thereof, as it appears when folded. Fig. IV represents a top view thereof, with the cap partially removed.

The letters A, B, indicate two disks, and G, a web or jacket connecting the disks, forming the principal features of the toy. The disks A, B, are composed of paste board or other like rigid material, one (A) being usually covered with thin sheet metal, as at A; while the jacket C, is composed of paper or other flexible material, to render it capable of folding or collapsing, causing the disks and jacket, jointly, to act as a bellows. When the flexible jacket 0, is of paper, it is preferably laid in folds, as shown, and glued to the disks.

The central portion of the sheet metal A of the top disk A, is raised, forming a dome D, which is perforated with a central hole e, and upon which there is hinged to said disk a central cap F, as by a pivot g, in such a manner as to adapt this cap to overlap the hole of the disk, or dome. approximately round in shape; and when the toy is to be applied to use, the perforated cap F, is set over the hole 6, the pocket 0, is distended, and taking hold of the disk A, with the fingers of the left hand, a charge of smoke is blown into the body of the toy through the hole 5 of the cap. The cap F, is then removed from the hole 6, and the bottom disk B, is gently and repeatedly tapped with one of the fingers of the right hand, whereby the smoke is expelled through the hole e, in pufis, each of which assumes the form of a ring as it emerges from said hole.

It will be noticed that by making the hole 8, of the cap, of relatively small size, it has a tendency to confine the smoke in the toy until the main hole 6, is exposed; but it is evident that the cap hole 5, may also be used for creating the desired smoke rings, by leaving the cap in normal position, thus permitting a variation in the diameter of the rings. The eifeet of the dome D, is to concentrate or deflect the smoke toward the middle of the disk A, insuring its uniform expulsion through the hole 6, so as to produce comparatively solid smoke rings; and when the cap F, is left in position on the dome for creating the desired rings, the cap tends to further concentrate the escaping smoke.

In some cases either or both of the disks A, B, may be utilized for displaying an advertisement.

When the toy is not in use, the jacket 0, may be folded as shown in Fig. III, bringing the whole into a comparatively small compass, for convenience of carriage, as in the pocket.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. A smoke-ring toy comprising the two.
