BUNG. No.'515,003. Patented Feb. 20, 1894.
WITNESSES IN VENTOR j w-M T WM fi ATTORNEY-5'.
UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY A. LEWIE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BUNG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 515,003, dated February 20, 1894.
Application filed June 10, 1893- Serial N0. 477,229. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY A. LEWIE, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Bungs, of which the following isa specification.
My invention relates tobungs and has forits object to produce a bung which shall be firmly retained in the vessel and at the same time be easy to start.
To this end my invention consists of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which.
Figure 1 is a view, partly in tranverse section, of my improved bung applied to a Vessel. Fig. 2 is an outer face view of my improved bnng.
A indicates a portion of the wall of the ves sel apertured to receive the tapered bushing B. This bushing is inserted from the outside of the vessel, the small end of the bushing entering first.
O is a flanged plug having a projection c which enters the inner end of the bushing until the flangef bears upon the inner end of the bushing, as shown in Fig. 1. This flanged plug is frictionally held in the bushing until driven out since the projection c on the plug fits and fills the cylindrical bore of said bushing for a considerable portion of its length.
The flanged plug 0 constitutes the bung, which prevents the escape of liquid contents from the bung-hole. The pressure of the fluid contents of the vessel on the plug and its flange assists in holding it in place, causing the flange to bear against the inner end of the bushing.
When it is desired to tap the vessel the plug is driven in by a blow of a faucet, vent or other instrument. The faucet maybe allowed to remain in the bushing to withdraw the contents of the vessel.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a bung the combination of a bushing having cylindrical bore, of a solid plug 0 adapted to fit and fill said bore and held in it by frictional contact only, said plug having on its inner end a head or enlargement which is adapted to lap over and bear against the inner end of said bushing, as and for the purpose specified.
HENRY A. LEWIE.
