SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,991, dated February 20, 1894. Application filed August 31,1893. {Serial Ila-484,512. (No model.) I
vented a new and useful Improvement in Pu'mps, of which the following is a full, clear,
and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in pumps and consists in providing means for securing the pump stock in the base at a desired point of vertical adjustment, and in providing a handle support to embrace the air chamber that is free'to rotate about the air chamber,-or be secured in desired adjustment, said handle support to support the pump handle, the prongs of which are pivotally secured to the sidebars extending upwardly and connected to the upper end portion of the valve rod.
Figure 1, of the accompanying drawings is a view in perspective of a pump illustrating my invention in normal position; Fig. 2, a transverse view through the center of the base and parts connected therewith. Fig. 3, is a perspective of the holding block in the base. Fig. 4., is a sectional view of the handle support. Fig. 5, is a sectional view of the holding block.

A, represents the base in which is provided an annular aperture, a to receive the pump stock B. At one side of the base is provided an outwardly projected portion b, and an inside recess c, the inside face 01 inclined vertically. A holding block as 0, having an inclined back portion f adapted to the inclined face d of the recess a in the base. In the back portion of the block O is provided a recess h to receive the tightening bolt j,- the frontor face portion of the block is circular in form, adapted to embrace the side of the pump stock B.
In operation, the base A, is placed on the usual platform over the well, the pump stock B, is passed through the aperture 0. the desired distance, the nut k is then turned on the bolt 9', to raise the block 0 against the inclined face (1, of the recess 0, and the front stock, thus forming a vise like grip on the stock between the side Z of the aperture a, and the circular portion of the block O. Heretofore the upper portion of the stock B has been threaded andturned into the top portion of the base, and the upper end of the lower portion threaded and turned into the bottom portion of the base or secured in vertical adj ustment by a set screw passed through circular side of the block against the pump the neck of the base A, and turned against the side of the stock, frequently destroying the stock. The upper end of the stock B is threaded to turn into a similar thread in the lower end portion of the pump head D, completing the pump as shown in Fig. 1. By the simple device heretofore described the height of the spout E, or of the handle F may be determined and the parts secured in adjustment, or should the water become low, in the well, in a moment the stock may be lowered to reach the water and secured by the hold ing block, to accomplish this'purpose it is only necessary to relax or tighten the block 0 against the stock by the use of the screw bolt j. On the inner face of the ring portion is provided alug p, projected toward the center of the ring, and on the opposite side is provided a set screw g by which the cylinder or ring portion of the handle support is secured about the air chamber 1" between the annular ribs 3 and t. In the upper rib t is cut a small recess w, through which the lug p is passed, when placing the ring portion m of the handle support about the air chamber and between the ribs 8 25. At the end of the prongs H on the inner end of the pump handle is provided outwardly projected stud pins 1), to which is connected arms J, the upper end portions of which are pivotally connected with the upper end portion of the valve rod K.
The pump handle may be turned with the support G, and arms about the upper portion of the pump and secured in desired position by the lug p and set screw q.
the object of my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with the pump stock B, of a base A, cast in one piece and having at one of its sides a recess 0, the inner face inclined upwardly toward the stock, a block G, the back portion of which is adapted to the inner face of the recess 0, the face of said block adapted to the contour of the stock, and a screw whereby the block may be raised to grasp and impinge the stock between the block and the opposite side of the perforation a, in the base, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination with the pn mp stock B, of the base A, having at one of its sides a recess 0, having an inclined inner face d, a holding block C, having an inclined face f, adapted to the face (1 of the recess 0, a recess 7t in the back to receive the bolt j, and circular face portion to engage the stock and a screw bolt j to raise the block in the recess to secure the stock in desired vertical adjustment, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
