WOOD-CARVING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,731, dated February 13, 1894. Application filed May 2'7, 1893. $erial No. 475,717. (No model.) I
T0 at whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that we, ALECK SAUNDERS, manufacturer, and JOHN STORY, mechanic, both of the town of Goderich, in the county of Huron, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wood-Carving Machines, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in wood carving machines and the object of the invention is-firstto design a multiple carver in which the revolving cutters may be so held thatthey will admit of ready horizontal and vertical adjustment sim ultaneously-at the will of the operator of the machine and-- sec0ndlyto provide a means of balancing or supporting the frame of the cutters so that they may with but little exertion be brought to operate against the wood to be carved and it consists essentially-first-in jonrnaling the series of cutters preferably in a double bar, which is pivotally connected to the end of the arms pivoted in the ends of the frame, which itself is swung on the end of a shaft journaled in a hanging, swinging frame supported on" the main driving shaft of the machine, the cutters being connected and driven from the main driving shaft in the manner hereinafter more particularly explained, and-secondly-of supporting the horizontal swinging frame by means of a weighted lever connected to the same by chain as hereinafter more particularly explained.

E, is a counter shaft journaled at its ends in the jaws, d, and, F, is a swinging frame hinged on the ends of the counter shaft, E, between the jaws, cl. The outer ends of the frame, F, are in the form of two bars, f, f.
g, g, are two horizontal bars located one above the other and pivotally secured on the ends of the arms, G, pivoted at their inner ends on the vertical pins, f, f.
H, are the cutters, the vertical spindles, h,
of which are journaled in the double bar, 9, g, and, H, is a dummy or idle cutter.
' I, is a lever supported on a drop standard fastened to the ceiling or any suitable point above the machine. The one end of the lev'er, I, is connected by the chain, 7;, to the eyebolts, J, in the center of the frame, F. The other end of. the lever is provided with a weight, K.
L, is a pattern block of wood which is placed beneath the idle cutter and which is of course first cut out in the exact style of ornamentation, which it is designed to impart upon the blank blocks placed underneath the cutters, H. The blocks, M, are held on the table of the frame, A, by means of any suitable fastening.

P, are grooved pulleys secured on the counter shaft, E. The pulleys, N, are connected to the pulleys, P, by the rope belts, Q, which pass through the guiding rollers, O, as shown.
B, is a pulley secured on the counter shaft and connected by the belt, S, to the pulley, T, on the main driving shaft, 0.
U, are the handles, which are designed to be grasped by the operator so as to horizontally adjust the movement of the swinging frames and consequently controlthe operation of the cutters.
In the operation of our machine it will of course be understood that the central block, L, will be of course completely carved and that the dummy cutter will be manipulated by means of the handles, U, so' as to follow the carving in the central block. The side blocks against which the revolving cutters are acting will of course follow the exact movement of the dummy cutter and operate upon their respective blocks so as to produce carved blocks identical with the carved block. In so carving the side blocks it will of course be understood that the dummy and revolving cutters will have to be changed from time to time, this of course depending upon the style of carving of the central block. We do not show any means whereby different cutters may be substituted as we do not claim anything in substituting difierent classes of cutters as this is very commonly done in carving.
From the construction of the swinging frames and the bars, 9, on the ends of the arms, G, manipulated by the handle, U, it will be seen that the cutters may be lifted up from the work any desired distance, thrown back, and in fact capable of horizontal movement in any direction which the operator of the machine may desire in order to follow the carving of the central block exactly.
What we claim as our invention is 1. In combination with the frame, the driving shaft journaled therein, the swinging frame depending from the driving shaft, a
, supplemental shaft journaled in thelower part of the swinging frame, a second frame pivotally connected to the swinging frame by the supplemental shaft, arms pivotally connected to the second frame, bars mounted in the outer ends of the arms carrying a dummy cutter, and rotating cutters with operating connections to the supplemental and main shaft, substantially as described.
2. The combination with the dummy cutter, H, secured in and the operating cutters journaled in the double bars, g, g, pivotally attached on the ends of the arms, G, pivoted in the ends of the double bar, f, f, forming part of the swinging frame, F, of the swinging frame, D, supported on the shaft of the machine and pivotally connected to the swinging frame, F, and the cutters, H, provided with the pulleys, N, which are connected by the belts, Q, through the guiding pulleys, O, in the double bar, f, f, to the pulleys, P, on the counter shaft, E, which is driven from the main shaft, 0, as shown and for the purpose specified.
3. In combination with the frame having the main driving shaft journaled therein, the swinging frame depending from said driving shaft, a horizontal divided bar having rearwardly extended ends pivotally connected to the lower part of the swinging frame by means of a supplemental shaft, a bar carrying a dummy and rotating cutters having link connections to the divided bar, driving bands connecting the rotating cutters with the supplemental shaft, and guide pulleys located between the parts of the divided bar for guiding said driving bands, substantially as described.
