Description

(No Model.)
J. STEVENS.
FIEEPROUF WINDOW SHUTTER. No. 514,515. Patented Feb. 13, 1894 7171237266563.- ya f @FVK/W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN STEVENS, OF MELBOURNE, VICTORIA.
FIREPROOF WINDOW-SHUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,515, dated February 13, 1894.
Application filed March 8, 1893. Serial No. 465,087- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN STEVENS, men chant, of Flinders Street, Melbourne, in the Oolonyof Victoria, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, have invented an Improved Fireproof Shutter for Window or other Similar Openings in Buildings, of which the f0llowing is a specification.
It is the object of my invention to provide a cheap, simple and efiective shutter for inclosing a window or otheropeningin a build ing as a protection against the entrance, exit or spread of fire without impairing said window as a means of ventilation, or light, and
, without affecting the view through the said window.
In the drawingsz Figure l is an exterior elevation of the shutter broken into sections so as to show the raw edges of the wire gauz 2o ing and its adjustment in the frame and cross-studs thereof; Fig. 2, a sectional view of the cross or transverse studs, showing the wire gauzing clamped between said crossstnds and their inner plates by means of nuts 2 5 and bolts.
In the drawings A is the exterior plates of the frame, B the cross or transverse bent rails, struts or bars to strengthen the frame A. O the bolts clamping such cross-rails and plates 0 between which the gauzing E is set and secured. D the holes in the frame for reception of bolts 0.
It will be noticed by reference to Figs. 1
and 2 that the cross bars are bolted to each 5 other throughout their extent as well as being bolted to their open frames and they thus not only serve to confine or clamp the central part of the wire gauze, butthey serve also to clamp the open frames together.
In order that the wire gauze will be confined and sustained in proper position throughout its central portion the cross bars D are bent at the inner edges of the open frames so that their entire central portions lie close together and against the opposite sides of the wire gauze and when they are bolted together, the wire gauze is securely held.
I claim- 1. In combination in afire proof shutter the independent front and back open frames, the wire gauze having its edges clamped between said frames and the independent cross bars B extending over the wire gauze and having their ends bolted to the open frames, said bars being also bolted to each other and thus serving to clamp the open frames together as well as to brace them and confine the body of the wire gauze substantially as described.
2. In combination in a fireproof shutter, the independent front and back open frames, the wire gauze clamped between them and the independent cross bars B, B, having their ends secured to the outer side of the open frames, and having theircentral portions bent inward toward each other at the inner edges of the open frames to clamp the wire gauze between them, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN STEVENS.
