TOBAGO@ BOX. 110,514,512. Patented Feb. 13, 1894.
Irv/Mn fa/1 5M @fami/L7 4, Mfi? UNITED STATES PATENT CEEioEe CHARLES E. SPEAKER, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
TOBACCO-BOX;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,512, dated February 13, 1894.
Application tiled Iuly 24, 1893. Serial No. 481,345. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it mag/renown,.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. SPEAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Boxes, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to packing boxes, and has reference more particularly to that rclass of boxes designed to receive tobacco which is compressed within the box under great pressure.
In the drawings,l1`igure 1, is a top view of my improved box. Eig. 2. is a view of my lock. Fig. 3. is a section of box with lock in position.
a indicates the sides of my improved box, b the dove-tailed battens, c, the top, d the circular battons e, thelock, f lf the slots.
The sides a, are composed of a single thickness of lumber which is stiened by means of the battons b or d, which are inserted into the slots ff at cross-grain and can be glued or otherwise fastened or not, as the case may require. After the sides a have beenv made up, an open-ended box is then made up composed of four sides o united at their edges either by tenoning and mortising or nailing or gluing or in any manner desired. The
bottom of the box can be made and held in position in any suitable manner. When the locks e are used the lower tooth g is driven into the top of the box and the upper tooth g is drveninto the sides c as shown in Fig. 3. In some cases, where it is not essential to use the locks e, they may be omitted.
In my prior Patent No. 502,83,issued August 8, 1898, I described a box similar in every particular to the present box except that'I omitted the dove-tailed and circular battens which I find may be useful and essential to the box in some cases.
Having thusdescribed my invention, what I claim is- In a packing box the combination of the sides a composed of a single thickness of lumber and provided with the dove-tailed slots f, the dovetailed battons b, tted in said slots, the grains of said battens being crossed with those of said sides, the top c and the locks e having the teeth g g for securing said top to said sides, substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
CHARLES E. SPEAKER.
Witn esses ALPHoNso BROWN, R. O. HARNEY.
