SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,158, dated February 6, 1894.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD MILLER, Jr., a cltlzen of the United States, residing at Meriden, New Haven county, Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Argand Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of Argand lamps in which a Wick adjusting sleeve surrounds the inner Wick tube.' It is intended to. provide a simple means of making such wick sleeves removable from the lamp.
In the accompanying drawings, which represent in perspective and partly broken away so much of an Argand lamp as is necessary to show my invention, Figures 1 and 2 show dierent forms of my device. Fig. 3 shows in detail parts shown in Fig. 2.

In the example of my invention shown in Fig. l of the drawings, the fount top A, openings a and a', wick tube B and sleeve C may be of usual or convenient form. As shown, the tube B has the double function of central air supply and inner Wick tube, the sleeve C is of a diameter to move freely thereon and is adapted to carry the wick on its outer surface. These details are non-essential to my invention. The sleeve C is provided with a vertical, tubular bearing c, in which a vertical arm of an offset D is capable of limited rotation. At the outer end of the horizontal arm of the offsetD is formed a socket d here shown as internallyscrew-threaded. Through the opening a in the fount top A passes a drawbar E, the lower end of which is formed with an external screw-thread e adapted to engage with the socket d.
The operation of my device will be readily 5o understood from an examination of the drawf ings.

The oset D being rotated in the bearing c to a position tangential to the sleeve C, the sleeve and offset may be introduced through the opening a in the fount top A, the sleeve of course surrounding the tube B. This is shown in dot-ted lines, Fig. l. The offset D is Ithen turned outward radially from the sleeve C, the draw-bar E inserted through the opening a', and its lower end c screwed into the socket d. A Wick may then be slipped on 6o the sleeve C and the lamp is ready for use. It is clear that by a reversal of the above described operation the sleeve and draw-bar may be removed from the lamp as desired.
In Fig. 2 of the drawings I have shown the 65 offset D as formed with recesses d', cl, adapted to engagement in the recess e at the lower end of the drawbar E. This device is most clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The operation of the device is not changed by 7o these alterations, which are exhibited in proof of the fact that my invention does not depend upon a particular form of embodiment. I have also shown the opening a as provided with an internally projecting sleeve which 7 5 forms a guide for the draw-bar E. When this mode of construction is followed, there is no obstruction Whatever to the operations of hunting and otherwise finishing thefount, the sleeve and draw-barbeing separately finished 8o and inserted after the parts are complete.
I am of course familiar with several devices in which a draw-bar is formed with atongue adapted to detachable engagement with a socket on the wick sleeve. By this means the removability of the sleeve is provided for but the draw-bar cannot be released from the lamp.
I am not aware of any previous device in which an oset is pivoted to the Wick sleeve 9o and provided at its free end with means for attaching it to a draw-bar. Neither am I aware of any previous device in which an offset is pivotally secured to the wick sleeve so as to be capable of rotation thereon in a horizontal plane. In my device the offset being thus secured to the sleeve may be turned to such a position as to be capable of insertion with the sleeve through the collar or central opening of the lamp While when turned to its Ioo radial position it is capable of engagement with a straight vertically adjustable drawbar. In this Way the separate removability of the sleeve and draw-bar is secured.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is as follows:
l. In an Argand lamp in combination, a wick adjusting sleeve, an oset pivotally secured to said sleeve so as to be capable of limited rotation in a horizontal plane and a draw-bar, said offset and said draw-bar being provided with means for detachably securing the one to the other, substantially as described.
2. In an Argand lamp in combination, a Wick adjusting sleeve, an oiset pivotally secured to said sleeve so as to be capable of limited rotation in a horizontal plane and a draw-bar, said offset and said drawbar being provided the one with a socket and the other with a portion adapted to enter said socket and to be detachably secured therein, substantially as described.
3. In an Argand lamp in combination, a Wick adjusting sleeve, an oiifset pivotally secured to said sleeve so as to be capable of limited rotation in a horizontal plane and provided with a socket and a drawbar provided at its lower end with a portion adapted to detachable engagement in said socket, substantially as described.
4. In an Argand lamp in combination,awick adjusting sleeve, a vertical bearing on said sleeve, an oset secured within said bearing so as to be capable of limited rotation therein and a drawbar, said offset and said drawbar being provided with means for detachably securing the one to the other, substantially as described.
5. In an Argand lamp in combination, a fount top, a central opening in said fount top, a second and separate opening in said fount top, a wick adjusting sleeve, an offset pivotally attached to said sleeve, so as to be capable of limited rotation in a'horizontal plane said sleeve and offset being capable of passing through said central opening, and adraw bar adapted to pass through said second opening and to engage With said oiset Within the lamp, substantially as described.
