SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,985, dated February 6, 1894.

To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. COLTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Guides and Stops, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in door guides and stops and it has for its objects among others toprovide a simple and cheap stop and guide which can be quickly adjusted and put on and adjusted after the other parts are in. It can be put on any door where others have failed or have become worn out. The stop comprises a pivoted part secured to the lower back edge of the door and arranged to engage the door guide which latter is, arranged upon the floor and the bottom edge of the door is provided witha groove or channel therefor. The guide is secured in position by being lightly held as near its proper position as possible by screws or other means through slots or elongated screw-holes; the doors are adjusted to position by driving the guide out or in as the case may require until thedoors are exactly in place and then the guide is secured in place firmly by screws passed through the remain ing holes in the base of the guide. Means are provided whereby the doors may be drawn out of the pocket when desired by passing any suitable thin instrument in at the back bottom edge of the door and lifting the pivoted part, at the same time drawing the door forward. The stop is provided with a plug of wood or other suitable material to serve as a bumper.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear and the novel features will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification and in which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of myimprovements applied, with a portion broken away and parts in section. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the stop detached. Fig. 3 is a rear view of the same. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the guide. Fig. 5 is a top plan of the mov: able partof the stop removed from the socket. Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views in which they appear.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter A designates a door designed to slide in a pocket in the usual way and upon its bottom edge provided with a groove or channel a as seen in Fig. 1.
B is the guide; it consists of a base piece 'having screw holes 1) near the ends and with elongated holes or slot 1) as seen in Figs. 1 and 4., and with a central longitudinal raised rib B as seen in said figures, the said rib being at one end provided with a notch 11 for engagement with the stop which will soon be described, In affixing this guide it is first placed as near its proper position as can be determined and then screws passed through the elongated slots 2) and the doors can then be adjusted to position by driving the guide in or out as may be desired, and whenexactly in place the guide is rigidly secured by screws or, other means passed through the holes I).
The stop consists of a plate or casting 0 having holes 0 by which and suitable means it is secured in place at the lower back edge of the door, as seen in Fig. 1, and upon its rear face is formed a socket in which is loosely held the T-end cl of the stop as seen in Figs. 1 and 3, the casting or plate having a vertical slot 0 through which the body portion of the stop works as seen in Figs. 1,2 and 3, and the T- end is provided with a lug c as seen in Figs. and 3 which serves to limit the movement of the stop by coming in contact with the inner face of the casting or plate as seen in Figs. 1 and'2. The body portionD of the movable part of the stop is designed to work loosely through the slot 0' of the plate or casting C and at its rear end carries a head D formed with an offset or shoulder d as seen in Fig. 1 to engage the notch of the rib of the guide and E is a plug of wood or other suitable material driven vertically through a hole in this head at the offset as seen best in Fig. 1 and serves as a bumper to deaden the sound when the head strikes. Projecting from one or both sides of this head is a lateral portion or pin 6 as seen in Figs. 1,2 and 5 which are designed to be engaged by a thin instrument as for instance a case knife, passed in at the back bottom edge of the door to lift the head clear of the rib B and then by drawing the door forward at thesaine time it may be drawn out of its pocket. The rib B works in the groove or channel a. of the bottom edge of the door as seen in Fig. 1 and the door is thus guided in its movements.
Modifications in detail may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
WVhat I claim as new is- 1. The combination with a door having a groove, of adoor stop and a door guide provided with means for engaging said stop, as set forth.
2. The combination with a door having a groove, of a door step and an adjustable door guide provided with means for engaging said stop, substantially as specified.
3. A door guidehaving a base portion with holes and elongated slots and a longitudinal rib with notch at one end combined with a pivoted part having notched portion to engage said notch as and for the purpose specified.
4. A door stop comprising a casting with socket and vertical slot, and a pivoted part working through said slot and having one end provided with a T-head held loosely in said socket and the other carrying a head with shoulder and an adjustable guide having vertical rib with a notch to engage the shoulder of the head as set forth.
5. The combined door guide and stop described consisting of the guide with base piece, rib with notch and with elongated holes, the socket plate having vertical slot, the stop having T-head held by the socket loosely whereby the stop is free to play vertically and at the other end a head having a notch, a block with a notch and a laterally projecting pin, all substantially as shown and described.
