SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,831, dated January 30, 1894.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FERNANDO W. SEAVER, of Bennington, in the county of Switzerland and State of Indiana, haveinvented a new and Improved Saw-Clamp, of.which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in saw clamps such as are used for holding saws to be dressed or have other operations performed upon thein,.and the object of my invention is to produce a very simple and inexpensive clamp which'is adapted to stand against a work bench or any other convenient support, and which holds any kind of a saw in a perfectly rigid manner so that it may be easily dressed, which is constructed in such a way that both hands may be used to adjust the saw,'and the latter fastened by a single movement of the foot, and which has an adjustable hinge or fulcrum so that it may be easily adapted to fit saws of different thicknesses. 7
To these ends, my invention consists in a saw clamp, the construction of which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a partof this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.
Figure l is a perspective -view of my improved clamp, with a saw fastened between its jaws; and Fig. 2 is avertical cross section of the same.
The clamp is provided with an upright frame comprising the two side pieces 10 and a connecting cross bar 11, the said pieces .being preferably beveled at the bottom so that they will have narrow lower ends to stand upon. The upper ends of the side pieces are secured to a long jaw 12, adapted to fit against one side of a saw. On the upright frameis fulcrumed a swinging frame comprising the two side pieces or levers 13 and a connecting cross bar 14:. The levers 13 have secured to their upper ends a jaw 15, which is similar to the jaw 12, and which lies parallel therewith, as shown in the drawings. The jaws 12 and 15 have flat surfaces adapted to fit snugly against a saw, but the faces of the jaws may be roughened if necessary. The levers 13 are hinged to the upright frame, and the hinges form the fulcrums of the lovers 13, and comprise the straps 16 which are secured to the levers, and the bolts 16, which are pivoted to the straps and extend through the cross bars 11 of the upright frame, the outer ends of the bolts being provided with nuts 17 by which they may be adjusted and the fulcrums thus regulated so as to bring the jaws 12 and 15 into the necessary relative positions. J ournaled in the lower end of the upright frame is an eccentric roller 18 having an outwardlyextending treadle 19, and by stepping upon the treadle the roller is turned against the lovers 13, so as to force their lower ends outward and their upper ends inward, thus jamming the'jaw 15 against the jaw 12. On the roller 18 is a pin 20, adapted to engage a pin 21 on one of the levers 13, and this limits the movement of the roller in one direction, while a dog 22 is pivoted on the lever 13, and is adapted to engage the pin 20 and limit the movement of the roller in the other direction.
As above remarked, the frame of the clamp may be leaned against a work bench or other support, or if desired, it may be provided with braces 23, shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, which are arranged substantially like the braces of a step-ladder, and which may be swung outward to support the frame of the clamp.
When the clamp is to be used the treadle 19 is turned up so as to permit the separation of the jaws 12 and 15; the saw 24. to be dressed is adjusted by the hands between the jaws, and while the saw is held in the desired position the operator steps upon the treadle 19 so as to turn down the roller 18 and clamp the jaws to the saw, which is thus held rigidly in place.
Having thus described my invention, I claim'as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1.
