ATTACHMENT FOR VISES.
Application filed November 13, 1915.
3 ANDREW, a citizen of Argentina, residing at lar Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Vises; and l do hereby declare the following to be full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments for vises and my object is to provide a clamping means for forcing the jaws of the vise into clamped engagement with an object and hold the jaws against movement.
A further object is to provide means for operating the clamping mechanism by directing pressure of the feet thereon. And a further object is to provide means for attaching the operating mechanism to the clamping mechanism. j Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in rthe accompanying specification.
ln the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application, Figure 1 is an elevation of the vise showing the foot operating mechanism attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view as seen on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the clamping mechanism and shaft therefor when removed from the vise. Fig.
4 is a sectional view showing a different means of attaching the foot operating mech anism to the clamping mechanism, and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary top plan view showing parts of the vise in section.
Referring to the drawings in which simireference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates a bench or support which may be constructed in any preferred manner to which is attached the bed plate 2 of a vise, said vise comprising a stationary jaw 3 and a movable jaw 4, said movable jaw having a shank 5 which `projects through a slot in the fixed jaw so that said jaws may be operated to receive objects of different sizes.

shaft 7 and rotates therewith, the upper end of the shaft extending through bearings 8 attached to the stationary jaw 8, while the lower end thereof projects downwardly through the bed plate 2 and has an elongated slot 9 therethrough. As best shown in 5 of the drawing the face of the cam 6 engages a wedge a which cooperates with toggle blocksq and c, the toggle block b in turn engaging a hook d of a clamping plate e, said clamping plate having teeth or serrations f which cooperate with similar teeth or serrations g on the face of the shank 5 of the movable jaw 4 and when the cam is turned to the position shown in Fig. 5 the jaw 4 will be securely held against outward movement.
r)The parts so far described are well known in the art and the cam has heretofore been operated by means of a hand lever as shown by dotted lines 10 in Fig. 3, necessitating the use of one hand for operating the cam,
while the other hand is employed for positioning and supporting the object engaged by the vise, and to overcome this objectionable feature ll provide means for operating the cam by foot power, thus leaving both hands of the operator free to handle the object engaged by the vise. To this end therefore a standard 1l is provided, the upper end of which has a hollow sleeve l2 for the reception of the lower end of the shaft 7, a pin 13 being extended transversely through the sleeve and the slot 9 of the shaft so as to cause the shaft to rotate with the stand.- ard. The lower end of the standard is rotatably mounted in a bracket 14 which may be secured in any suitable manner to the floor, in order to hold the standard against swinging movement. The standard 11 has attached thereto adjacent its lower end a cross bar 15, the ends of the cross bar being preferably bent outwardly so that the operator can readily direct pressure thereon with his feet and as a greater amountof pressure 1s required in locking the jaw 4 in engagement with an object than is required f until the work is engaged on opposite sides by both jaws. The operator then places his foot upon the tread plate "16 and ,directs force thereagainst thereby rotating the standard 11 and forcing the eccentric face 17 of the cam against the wedge a and eX- tending the toggles bf and o which engage the teeth f of the plate c with .the teeth g on the face of the shank 5 and as the movement of the toggles tends to move plate e and the jaw 4 inwardly, the work will be securely clamped between ythe two jaws and .the jaw 4L held against .outward .movement by the impinging aetion of the cam face against the wedge and toggles. As soon as it is desired to remove the work from the vise, pressure of the feet is direeted against the Opposite end of the cross bar 15 thereby .disengaging the cam from the toggles and releasing the platefe from the shank `of the kjaw d, and in view of the fact that the cam is operated entirely by the feet of the operator, b oth hands are left free to support and han- (lle the work. As the operator does not always move the end of the cross bar 15 a suiiicient distance to entirely release the cam from the toggles, thereby causing a clicking or scraping noise when the movable jaw is adjusted inwardly .or outwardly, a coil spring 19 is introduced around the lower end of the standard 11 above the bracket 14, k011e end of the spring being secured to the standard and the opposite end to the bracket, the tension of the spring being such as to cause the standard and vparts attaehed thereto lto rotate sniiiciently to fully disengage the cam from the toggles after foot pressure has been applied to release the cam, but does not affect the ycam when forced into engagement with the toggles.
Instead of providing `the slet 9 in the shaft 7 pins 20 may be entered through bores in the shaft land sleeve for securing the Sleeve te thesheft, as Shown in Fig. 4 0f the drawing, the adjustment 0f the Standard 11, lengthwise being accomplished through the movement of said standard in the bracket '14.,
This attachment can be very cheaply pro duced and can be readily connected to the vSeS new in use, and owing te the provision of the slot in the cam shaft or the adjustment of the standard through the bracket, the, vise may be positioned upon benches or supports of various heights without affecting the position or operation of the cross bar and parts to which it is attached.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An attachment for vises comprising the combination with a vise having a iixed and a movable jaw, a cam whereby said jaw is moved into, and held in, working position, a shaft carrying said cam, a standard secured to the shaft, a supporting bracket at the lower end of the standard, and a pressure receiving cross bar carried by the standard.
2. The combination with a vise having a fixed and a movable jaw, a cam whereby said jaw is moved into, and held in, working position, a shaft carrying said cam, said shaft having an elongated slot therein, a standard, a hollow sleeve fixed to the standard and Aengaging the end of said shaft, a pin extending through the sleeve and the slot in the shaft, a supporting bracket at the lower end of the standard, a cross bar iixed to the standard, and a tread plate at one end of the cross bar.
3. The combination with a vise having a fixed and a movable jaw, of a cam, a standard attached to said .cam and depending therefrom, and means connected with the standard adjacent its lower end adapted to receive pressure from the feet of the operator to rotate the cam in either direction.
4L. The combination with a vise having a iiXed and a movable jaw, of a cam, a standard attached to the cam, a cross bar connected to the standard adapted to receive pressure from the feet of the operator to rotate the cam in either direction, and means to assist the rotation of the standard in one direction.
5. The combination with a vise having a fixed and a movable jaw, of a cam, a standard attached to the cam, a supporting bracket at the lower end of the standard, means connected with the standard to receive pressure from the feet of the operator to rotate the cam in either direction, and a spring having one of its ends secured to the standard and its opposite end to said bracket to complete the rotation of the standard in one direction.
