ROBERT NIVEN, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
SHIPPING-BOX.
SPEOIFICATiON forming part of Letters Patent No. 513,819, dated January 30, 1894'. Application filed August 30, 1893- SerialNo. 484,369. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT NIVEN, of the city and county of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented an Improvement in Shipping Boxes or Crates for Celery, of which the following'is a specification.
The figure of the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification, is a perspective view of box'partly broken away to show interior construction thereof.
The object .of my invention is to preserve the celery in a fresh crisp state during shipment to market and for several days thereafter if need be which I accomplish by means of a cheap and convenient device for keeping the roots wet all the time.
A B represents a box (preferably of wood) of any desired size (I prefer to make them fourteen inches square by twenty inches deep) with a water-tight base or metal tray 0 D of any desired depth (five inches is sufficient) and having an opening E on one side extending from base to top of box, through which the celery can be conveniently inserted for packing while the box is placed on its opposite side B. When packed full the rod F is placed in position, the box again set upright and water (an inch or more) poured into the base or tray 0 D, in which the roots of the celery are standing.
The removable or swinging wire or rod F serves to keep the celery in an upright position when door G is open to display it in market.
vI make the box square and so hinge the door G thereto, that when open it lies flat on one side of the box as shown so as to be out of the way.
Having thus described my device so that any person skilled in the manufacture can readily make it, I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent A shipping box for celery constructed with opening E in one side, door G connected therewith, rod F extending laterally across, and secured to the sides of, this opening, for holding the celery in an upright position when door is open, and tray 0 D for keeping water around the roots of the celery, all substantially as set forth.
ROBERT NIVEN.
In presence of DEXTER M. SMALL, GEORGE L. ROCKWELL.
