Description

, (No Model.)
.1.1.0. LEB. "RAILROAD TIE.
Patented Jan. 30, 1894..
v.W/TNESSES:
A TTOVHNEYS.'
UNITED STATES PATENT CEEICE.
JOHN CHESTER LEE, OF BEAVER, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, R. A. MANSFIELD, AND J. W. WALKUR OF SAME PLACE.
RAILROAD-TIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Iatent No. 513,792, dated January 30, 1894.
Application filed March 31, 1893. Serial No. 468.532. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN CHESTER LEE, of
Beaver, in the county of Wichita and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Railroad-Tie, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a plan View, partly in section, of my improved railroad tie. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section, the section being taken on line 2-2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view, partly in section, the section being taken on the line 3-3-in Fig. 2. Fig. 4. is an end elevation; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the clamping jaws for holding the rail.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
The object of my invention is to construct a simple and eective railway tie for supporting the rails and rigidly holding them in the position of use.
My invention consistsin the peculiar construction of the several parts and their novel combination or arrangement all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claims.
The body ct of the tie A, is provided with a broad flat base b, and with a longitudinal rib c which is widened at the ends, as shown in Figs. l and 3. Upon the end portions of the tie are formed elevated supports d, upon which rest the rails B. Each support d is furnished at opposite sides of the vcentral portion which supports the rail with dovetail recesses e, to which are fitted jaws f. The jaws are provided with a dovetail portion itting -the recesses e, and the portions v of the two jaws projecting above the rail support are curved over toward each other, and the jaws, as well as the rail support, are perforated to receive the bolt C, by means of which the jaws are forced together upon the foot and web of lthe rail B. The upper extremities of the jaws are preferably provided with one or more projections g, which enter into holes h in the rail ends, the said holes being made oblong to permit of the eXpansion of the rails.'
By'means of this device the rail is forced down into firm contact with the tie, and the tie is prevented from tilting on its foundations.
The bottom of the tie A is provided with transverse ribs fi, which are preferably located under the seat of the rail, said ribs preventing longitudinal movement of the tie.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination, with the metallic tie A, provided with the rail support dfurnished with dovetail recesses, of the jaws ff Iitted to the recesses and provided with curved upper ends oppositely arranged with respectto each other, and furnished at their adjacent extremities with one or more projections g for entering holes in the rail ends, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, of the tie A provided with the widened base b, the longitudinal rib c, rail support d furnished with dovetail recesses, the jaws f f provided with the projections g and fitted to the recesses, the bolt C extending through the jaws and through the rail'support, and the rail B, provided with oblong apertures for receiving the projections g, substantially as specified.
JOHN CHESTER LEE.
