Be it known that I, OHARLEs L. RUSSELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain newand useful Improvementsin Seats and Back-Rests; and I do herebydeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 7

This invention relates to seats and backrests without legs, and the object of the same is to provide simple and convenient means of the character set forth for use at seaside resorts or analogous places, the several parts being foldable and readily adjusted to a desirable position.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of the construction and arrangement of the several parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combined seat and back-rest the latter being shown let down in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the device as shown in full lines in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the seat and the frame, showing the said seat tilted. Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a rectangular base frame, consisting of side and end bars connected to each other and having on the inner sides thereof opposite to each other a pair of sector-plates 2 with a series of teeth 3 on one side and a single notch 4 on the opposite side of each ends of the said dogs 9 are adapted to engage the teeth 3 in adjusting the inclination of the back when in use, and also to engage the notch 1 when the said back is lowered in folded position for transportation. To unitedly operate the said dogs 9 a substantially UV-shaped wire frame 13 is'employed which moves in guides 14 secured to the inner sides of the uprights or arms 5 and has its lower ends attached to the upper ends of the said dogs. The upper end of the said arm 13 is bent outwardly so as to be conveniently engaged by the operator or person manipulating the device.

The seat proper consists of a board or rest 15, movably located between the front parts of the side bars of the rectangular frame 1 and is attached at its front end to a crank shaft 16 whose opposite ends have bearings in sockets 17, mounted in the opposite side barspf the said .frame 1. The said box or compartment 22 is supplied with a top hinged lid or cover 23, and is adapted to receive notions or articles that may be carried around with .the chair for the convenience of the person occupying the same. To the opposite ends of the batten or cross-bar 18 are pivot- I ally secured the inner ends of toggles 24, whose outer ends are connected to the adjacent portions of the side bars of the frame 1. To the inner end of the board or rest 15 on the under side of the same are mounted oppositely situated stationary pawls 25 with rear downwardly bent bifurcated ends 26 which straddle and'engage ratchet bars 27 secured to stand away from the lower portions of the sector-plate 2. Adjacent to the said ratchet bars 27 are releasing levers 2 8 which consist of wire arms wound around studs or posts 29, and having their forward ends 29" extended upwardly between the board or rest 15 and bent over the top edges of the opposite side bars of the frame 1, while their rear ends 28' extend parallel with the said ratchet bars and are formed with upward projections 29 which are adapted to release the pawls 25 from the ratchetbars to allow the board or rest 15 to return to its normal position.

In operation the wire frame 13 is elevated to actuate or release the dogs9 from engage went with the teeth 3 of the sector plates 2 to adjust the back-rest at any angle desired or to fold the said backrest downwardly against the forward part of the rectangular frame 1 and allow the said dogs to engage the notches 4. When in this folded position, the device is about equally balanced and a handle 30 is placed on one or the other of the said bars of the said rectangular frame 1 to provide means for conveniently transporting the entire device from one place to another, or when the back-restis adjusted atan angle, the board or rest 15 is drawn upwardly as shown in Fig. 1 at an upward angle of incli nation to obviate the sliding or slipping of the person resting thereon from the same and when the said board or rest 15 is thus adjusted the pawls 25 sustain it in adjustable po sition by engagement with teeth of the ratchet bar 27 in advance of those usually engaged when the said rest or board is in its normal position. When it is desired to have the board or rest 15 return to its normal position, the releasing pawls 28 are operated by being pressed upward to disengage the pawls 25 from the ratchet bars 27, and the rest or board falls after the pawls 25 have been released by the application of force thereto. The parts are so arranged that the back rest may be adjusted to sit or recline at any angle, or be wholly lowered so that the occupant can lie at full length upon the device, or the said back. rest may be elevated to suit an upright posture of the occupant.

The device as a whole is exceptionally simple in its operation and forms a convenient means of resting upon the shore or ground at places previously stated or elsewhere, as may be desired. The compartment 22 can beconveniently employed for the reception of books,

articles of sewing, or other devices and carried from place to place with the combined seat and back-rest.

It is obviously apparent that many minor changes in the several parts and their proportions might be made and substituted for those shown and described, so long as they are within the scope of the invention, without departing from the nature or spirit of the said invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- In a device of the character set forth, the combination of a lower elongated frame having a compartment at the rear of the same, a crank shaft mounted in the front of said frame, a seat board or rest, attached to said crank-shaft, and adapted to be raised at an angle of inclination, pawls and ratchet bars for holding the seat in its adjusted position, releasing levers for said seat-rest or board, sector-plates rising from the said frame, and having a series of teeth in the rear thereof and notches in the front of the same, a backrest pivotally connected to said sector-plates and adapted to be adjusted at an angle of inclination or folded down over the forward part of the said frame and a pair of spring actuated dogs carried by said back rest and adapted to engage said series of teeth and notches of the sector-plates, one side of the said frame being supplied with a handle sub stantially as described. p
