Be it known that I, LANsINe A. PALMAR, of Iansas City, Jackson county, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Stretchers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
Myinvention relates to wire stretchers, and consists of a handle or lever portion, a stationary block, and a pivoted block carried by said lever.
The object of the invention is to produce a Wire stretching device Which may be quickly' and easily operated, which is positive and reliable in operation, and which is simple, trong, durable and inexpensive of construcion.
With these objects in view, my invention consists in the peculiar and novel con struct-ion and arrangement of parts, as Will be herein after described and claimed.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1, is a perspective vieW of the device, the handle being broken away. Fig. 0, is avertical longitudinal sectional view, taken on the line .frof Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a vertical transverse sectional view, taken on the line y-y of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4, is a view showing in plan, a portion of a fence, and showing my improved wire stretching device applied thereto in operative position.
In the said drawings, 1 designates the handle or lever-portion of the device, and this handle is formed near one end with a rectangular recess 2 to receive a plate 3 of chilled or case-hardened steel, or other suitable metal,
. the outer surface of Which lies flush with the dle portion, and these bolts are engaged by clamping nuts 7 which are screwed up against the handle 1. Projecting centrally upward from the inner end of the plate 3 is a cylindrical hub 8, and pivotally mounted upon said hub so as to operate laterally upon the outer surface of the plate 3 is a clamping block 9. In order to secure this clamping block in position and also to secure the inner end of the plate 3, a bolt 10 is passed through the cylindrical hub 8 and also through aligned openings or passages in the plate 3 and handle l, and is engaged at its projecting end by a nut 11, which clamps the head of the bolt l0 firmly upon the cylindrical hub 8, and said hub projecting slightly above or beyond the` outer surface of the clamping block 9 prevents the head of the bolt from `binding upon the clamping block 9 and interfering With its free pivotal movement, as hereinafter referred to. The clamping block 9 is formed at its outer or free end with a shoulder 12, which is concentric to the axis of the cylindrical hub 8, as is also the shoulder 5 of the block 4, and these shoulders 5 and 12 are preferably serrated or roughened as` shown. In order to limit the lateral movement or swing of the clamping block 9 the said block is provided in its under side with a segmental groove or recess 13 which is preferably concentric to the axis of the cylindrical hub, and projecting outward from the plate 3 and engaging said groove or recess is a stop-pin or lug 14; this lug being adapted to strike against the end Walls of said grooves or recess when the clamping block is operated.
In order to illustrate the-operation of the wire stretching device clearly, I have shown a portion of a fence consisting of the posts A and B and a wire O stretchingfrom the post A to the post B and beyond. Now in order to stretch this wire tightly that portion of the Wire immediately beyond the postB is placed against the shoulder 5, the clamping block 9 being turned sufficiently to allow the 95 wire to be placed in said position, and the side of the lever near its outer end is made to Abear against the post B as shown in full lines in Fig. 4f. The clamping block 9 is noW moved to bind upon or clampthe Wire between the shoulders 5 and 12, which being serrated or roughened securely grasps said wire. The outer end of the handle 1 is now moved to the position shown in dotted lines Fig. l, or a sufcient distance in that direction to strain the wire as desired, the handle or lever having its fulcrurn upon the adjacent rear corner of the post B as clearly shown.
It will be seen during this operation, that it will be impossible for the Wire to slip between the clamping blocks owing to the roughened surface thereof, and also because as the strain or pull upon the wire becomes greater, the clamping operation of the pivoted block 9 increases in a corresponding ratio.
From the above description, it will be seen that I have produced a Wire stretching device, which is positive and reliable in operation, and which is simple, strong, durable and zo inexpensive of construction.
