E. BOLTON.
FENCE WIRE STRETGHER.
N0. 351,422. Patented Oct. 26, 1886.
N. PETERS, Pholn-Lifllugraphnr, Washlnghn. D. C.
' NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDlVARD BOLTON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FENCE-WIRE STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,422, dated October 26, 1886.
Application filed April 13, 1886.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD BoL'roN, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of New York city, in the county of New York, and in the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Tire Stretchers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The object of my invention is to produce a portable wire stretcher. or tightener for wire fences.
Referring to the drawings, of which Figure I is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. II is an end View of same. Fig. III is a plan View. Fig. IV is a side view of a modification.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures.
A represents a leverarm, made of wood or metal, four feet (more or less) in length. This arm is made round. It is straight from a to b, and tapered from b to c. The front end, 6, of the arm is provided with holes f, through which the wire g is inserted prior to twisting or tightening. H is a ratchet-wheel fastened onto the arm at j. This ratchet is operated by the pawl m and lever-arm a. The object of this ratohet-pawl and lever-arm is to enable the arm A to be turned.
The arm and ratchet may, if desired, be cast in one solid piece.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The arm A is placed against the post 0, as shown in Fig. I. The wire 9 is passed through by the ratchet and lever.
Serial No. 198,757. (No model.)
hold the arm from unwinding the wire while' the ratchet is operating.
WV is a chain fastened to arm A at o, and to the post 0 at 0. The object of this chain is to steady the arm and prevent the long end 9' from flying around and unwinding when only one operator is using the same, or when both are away. Two operators only are required to use this device.
I am aware that the arm A can be turned by means of a rod, S, inserted in a hole in same, as shown in Fig. IV, and produce the same result, but not so well and easily.
Having thus described my invention, I desire to claim- In a wire-stretcher, the combination of the lever-arm A, straight from a to b, and tapered from b to 0, provided with holes f and handles p p, the ratchet-wheel H, fastened to arm A, and operated by pawl m and lever n, and the steadying wire or chain WV, all arranged substantially as described and illustrated, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 31st day of December, 1885.
EDWARD BOLTON.
